(CBS) LOS ANGELES, Calif. Drunk drivers and their vehicles will be offered free trips home starting Friday night.
The service is available from 6 p.m. Friday through the end of the day Sunday in the 13 Southland counties served by the Automobile Club of Southern California.
Motorists, bartenders, restaurant managers, party hosts or passengers of a drinking driver may call (800) 400-4AAA for a free tow home of up to seven miles, according to Carol Thorp of the Auto Club.
Callers simply tell Auto Club operators, "I need a Tipsy Tow," to receive the free tow and ride home, Thorp said. A regular Auto Club-contracted emergency road service truck will be dispatched.
Callers need to keep in mind, however, that the service excludes rides for passengers and it is restricted to a one-way, one-time ride for the driver. Also the destination is limited to the driver's residence.
Reservations are not accepted and drivers should expect to pay the rate charged by the tow truck contractor for rides longer than seven miles, Thorp said.
Metro will offer free bus and train rides from 9 p.m. New Year's Eve until midnight Sunday, according to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority. The Metro Red, Gold, Green and Blue lines will all operate all night to help with public safety.
The Red and Gold lines will have all-night service for people attending Monday's Rose Parade in Pasadena, and Gold Line service will be more frequent, with more trains added to accommodate parade-goers, although regular fares will be in effect. Other bus and rail lines will operate on a Sunday schedule.
The Auto Club advised motorists to follow these safety tips:
-- At social events, designate non-drinking drivers who can get everyone home safely.
-- Call a friend or family member for a ride if you have been drinking.
-- Keep a cab company telephone number in your wallet so you can call for a ride home.
-- As a party host, offer a variety of non-alcoholic drink alternatives and provide a gift to guests who volunteer to be designated drivers.
-- Take the car keys away from friends and relatives who have had too much to drink.

See A Drunk Driver? Phone 800-TELL-CHP
(CBS) LOS ANGELES If you see a drunk driver this weekend, you can call a toll-free number and report the driver and location, a Caltrans official said Thursday.
Signs will be posted at roadside rest stops throughout the state publicizing the toll-free number said Caltrans Director Will Kempton.
"I'm proud to be part of this innovative partnership aimed at saving lives," said Kempton. "If you see a drunk driver, call (800) TELL-CHP."
The signs are part of the anti-drunken-driving effort being conducted by the California Highway Patrol, Caltrans, the state Office of Traffic Safety, and the state Department of Alcohol and Drug Programs.
The first sign was unveiled at a roadside rest stop near Sacramento Airport.
"We hope that placing this first sign at the start of what is historically one of the deadliest holiday weekends on California roadways will serve as a reminder to the 100 million travelers who visit California roadside rest stops
each year that they have a role and a responsibility in keeping our roadways safe from drunk drivers," said Mike Marando of the Office of Traffic Safety.
