OK lets do it...
How should we organize it? Maybe make a subforum for each month?

Hell, I basically wanna just take pix. That sounds like a good idea though.

Is everyone happy with the topics? I'm hoping Paul will give us some input being he has been the photog pro since the early days of SoCalEuro.

i dont' like water or texture.. i think its too common.. how about something strange? on another place there was "sexy" but it had to be related to food.

OK, Anyone else have any suggestions?

I think the topics as stands are good. There are a good mix between general and more specific topics. The general ones like water and texture are great because we'll get lots of interpretations and those are the times when someone will pull something great out their @ss and you'll be like, "Wow. I never even thought of it that way." That will help stretch everyone artistically and photographically.

I'm going to suggest 1024 or less standards... widest side being 1024 or less. 800 just isn't enough to show details sometimes.

Any suggestions as to how we can judge the best pix out of the 3 for each topic? Points maybe, then at the end of the year whoever has the most points...bla bla bla SoCaleuro Photog of the year title ;)

Ok the topics will stay as they are.

We do have a rating system on the forum, could use that ;) and the forum limits 1 vote per person

How about photoshopping? Aside from resizing, what will be allowed. I like the idea of "What comes out of your camera, goes in your post" mainly because I suck at photo editing.

We could definitely create a sub-category under Photography with the Topic and Month and have everyone post in there

But honestly, that gets a lil messy on admin end ... i think we could just have a sub-category called Photo Topic ... and have 1 new sub-category

i dont wanna have to create 12 sub-categories a year ... that just makes it cluttered (gotta think of where im coming from) ask ncttrnl he'll understand ;)

so anyway, we can create a dedicated Photo Topic sub-forum

Here are the rules another site uses:

"Entry period:

Entries will be accepted over a two week period (give or take a few days), beginning when a challenge is officially started. Check this site for specific dates of current and past challenges.
Entry requirements:

Pixel Size: No larger than 800 pixels on the longest side
File Size: No larger than 200 Kbytes
(file size and image size will be a trade-off: Use a smaller image size if it has lots of detail and you cannot get the file size below 200Kb)

Photos must be taken during the Challenge entry period.

If you are not able to adjust the photo size, you may submit the original photo, and it will be resized for you. If you send an entry that is larger than 200 Kbytes, it will be re-saved with additional compression to get the file size at or below 200 Kbytes.

Any post-processing you wish to perform is allowed, but you must specify all post-processing.

EXIF data must be in the photo you submit! If the EXIF data is not in the photo (due to post-processing, for example), upload the original photo along with your entry for EXIF verification.

No Signatures! Your name, logo, etc. are not allowed on your entry. User names are hidden during voting - do not add any text to your photo that may identify you.

Please do not post your entry elsewhere during the Challenge! To help keep photos anonymous, do not post your entry on dpreview or other photo web sites until the Challenge voting has ended.

Frames & Borders: No frames or borders are allowed.
Number of entries:

Only one entry per person will be accepted (if you're caught signing up more than once to submit multiple entries, all of your entries will be disqualified). You may change your entry at any time, and any number of times, during the entry period. You may submit one entry to the Main category and one entry to the Open category.
Submitting your entry:

You must be registered and logged in to submit an entry. If you are logged in, you will see a link to the upload form on the Challenge page.
Visibility of entries:

Your entry will not be visible to anyone but you until the end of the entry period. At that time, the entries will be displayed for the voting period. Information on who submitted the photos, camera model, etc., will be shown after voting ends.
Comments:

You may enter comments about photos throughout the voting period. During this time, you will only see comments you have entered and comments on your own entry. After voting ends, all comments will be visible to everyone, and you will be able to enter additional comments.
Voting:

Immediately following the entry period, all entries will be displayed for for public voting (over a weekend - Friday through Monday). You do not have to submit a photo to be able to vote - anyone registered on PanaChallenge can vote. You cannot vote for your own entry. You may change/update your vote at any time, and any number of times during the voting period. Voting consists of choosing your favorites, then ranking them in top ten order. Your first place vote will receive 10 points, second place 9 points, etc., down to 1 point for your tenth place vote. At the end of the voting period, the votes will be counted and the results will be displayed.

At least ten favorites must be selected before you can record your vote. You do not have to select all of your favorites during a single visit to the web site - you may select some favorites, then return later in the voting period to complete the process.
Subject:

The subject of the next Challenge will be determined by the winner of the Main category. When choosing a subject, please keep in mind that people all over the world may be entering - don't be too restrictive (for example, choosing "sea shells").

The winner of the main category is not obligated to choose a subject for the next Challenge. The winner may defer to the next in line (from 1st through 10th place).

For "mini" challanges the subject is choosen by a site administrator."

The rules I thought could be useful here I put in bold. Also, I think it would be better to announce the topic at the beginning of each challenge/month rather than list the whole year in advance. That way the photos are a little more spontaneous.??

Wow, that's way too complicated.
What's wrong with:
"Here's the topic for this month. Post your pictures, limit three per contestant per month.
No more than 800px largest side with a clickthrough to a larger size if you like.
Post-processing is allowed, please note if it was extensive.
Picture with the most votes wins.
The person with the most overall wins receives nothing but bragging rights."

-ajb Thats what I was aiming for.....:D And this was just a feeler thread to find out who would like to do this, the topics were just posted to see if anyone would like to have a say or change. Looks like we are going to keep the topics and I guess we can start at anytime...

I 2nd the idea of no photo-editing other than resizing. There are too many guru's at photoshop here for us amateurs to stand a chance :p

Keep it simple and fun

I only listed all the rules so everyone could see how someone else has been doing it and to give some ideas we could take from or add to. As I said, the ones I thought would be useful here I made bold. I agree with keeping it simple.

We need to learn photo processing, it's a major part of digital photography. I am basically wanting to learn during this reading their exif data and checking out what kind of processing was done. Everyone is an amature at one point ;)

ansel adams spent more time post processing than he did setting up his shots, post processing has been around longer than anyone here, it's not just for digital photography, to dissallow processing would be a travesty to photography in general

IMHO :p

Hey, can we upload a photo and them replace it later that month? otherwise we'll just have a lot of people uploading at the last minute (like me waiting for a better shot to come along and take itself for me)

Lets Bring This Back! - Photo Topic. i know the majority of SCE has cameras now. ;)

so none of this, "i dont have a camera" bs. we're still in the first week of December, so we can still have a contest for the month.
