Hi, this is the Wife. My husband (Tinytolo) said to come here if I had any car questions while he was away if I couldn't get a hold of him. He left this morning and of course something goes wrong with the car. This light came on in the Jetta. I looked it up in the manual and they said it is the "Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)." What is that and should I be concerned? What should I do? Please help  :(

Sorry to hear that, and sorry he had to leave. I am the guy that used to be your neighbor at Softwind Point! Anyways, if the car is under warranty, take it to the dealer to see what the problem is. If it's not under warranty, I (and several others) have the program VAG-COM that allows you to connect into the cars computer to see what is wrong. You live in like San Clemente right? I live down by Carlsbad if you are going to be down this way and want some help figuring it out.

Hey, actually I thought about it a little more.... Check to see if your gas cap is tightened all the way. If it is not tight, it will cause a MIL.

Hey thanks. I'll check the gas cap. If that's not the problem than I'm taking it into the Dealership this morning to see what is wrong. I'll keep you updated. Thanks again:tup: !

Hopefully that's it. Make sure it clicks a few times when you tighten it. It might take a little while to automatically clear the MIL.

Hi I dropped it off at the VW dealership this morning. The guy there says there could be 140 different reasons why the light went off so they will go over it. It will be $104 if the problem doesn't fall under warranty  . BUT I got a rental for the day and got an '06 convertible bug  . That car is SO awesome :D So I will find out later today is wrong with our Getta.

$104 for a VAG-tool scan? Yipes. That's $14 more than before, and it was pretty pricy even then.

Volkswagen called back and said that the reason the light came on was something about my car needing to be cooler, but that was covered under warranty which was sweet but what's NOT sweet is that he also said I need my fuel system cleaned and he said a lot of stuff along the lines like a manifold, hand cleaning stuff. That's NOT covered under warranty and they want $440 total. I hope someone here knows what I'm talking about cause I know I'm being really vague and have NO knowledge of cars....should I go ahead and do the fuel system cleaning?

No, don't let them do the fuel cleaning thing. Have them do the warranty repair and then get your car back. We'll help you out with any other problems you have.

That's awesome. But my car's not gonna fall apart or nothing if I don't get it done right? I just don't want the other one (husband) to get mad if I did something uncessary to waste money. :(

Okay I know I come off sounding really retarded cause I don't know anything about cars but he said something about the cooling inside the car wasn't cool enough so they have to change it....My husband won't be back until February 2007 (12-14 month deployment), will that be too long? :( Were they trying to rip me off?
