I used to drive home wasted all the time, before I was even 21, even though it has killed 2 friends when I was in high school, but I never got caught. but a couple of years ago I realized its only a matter of time untill I do or worse and haven't since.
The one that did it was one of my best friends and I were out drinking one night at a punkrock bar in LB and ended up really drunk at closing time.......really drunk. I get in my truck and he gets in his to go home. I dont remember the drive home but I got there. I get woken up the next morning by my buddy calling me asking if he got in a fight the night before and If I drove him home. Uhhhhh. no. I went over to his house, his truck is nowhere to be found, he has a what looks like a broken nose and a badly bruised wrist. So in my mind I'm figuring he wrecked his truck and somehow managed to find his way home. So we go looking for his truck or signs where its pieces might still be in the street (we both lived close to the bar). we find it parked and locked a few blocks from his house. We both figure he started to drive home, almost got there when he realized he was too drunk to drive and stoped and parked his truck.!? as for the damage to him, I think he fell down on the side walk! that was enough of a scare for me, he didn't learn, he finally got a D.U.I. but the one that straightend him out was not to long ago his girlfriend (bless her heart), heard his truck out side the house running (flowmasters on a GMC), but it kept running for a few mins. she goes out to check on him and finds him passed out in the drivers seat with his truck in the driveway.
but come on we've all been there.

i have and probably will again all depends on the circumstances, the only time i do it is when i'm coming from a very familiar area. i made it home from the block to long beach in 15 mins one night, that was the last time i drank heavily and drove home. it's been since the beginning of the year.

I used to, especially in college. Then a friend who worked for the CHP got killed while pursuing a DUI suspect. The 67 is now named after him, The Christopher P. Lydon Memorial Freeway. BIG wake up call.

i dont understand how nonchanlantly some of u can be admitting that u drink and drive. do u have ANY IDEA what you can do to others, let alone yourself? it only takes one drink to fuck u over. id be damn ashamed if i were in ur positions.

i was pretty stupid last year at college, but trying to clean up my act a bit ... but sometimes when you're caught between volunteering to drive after having a couple drinks, or not being able to stop one of the others who've had 10 or more (crazy bingers...), you have to choose the lesser of two evils.

Of course, I'm not even 21, so if I have a single beer and drive an hour later I could get a DUI ... no more risk-taking for me, my criminal days are over.

But I maintain that there's a huge difference between those who are slightly drunk, and the majority of people where I live (Flagstaff) - where people get absolutely hammered and drive ... there's 100 cops in that city, and they all have DUI quotas which they never fail to fill; the alcoholism in that city is astounding ... hard to live there and not wonder why you can go to the gas station and buy enough alcohol to kill 10 people

... and speaking of the "lesser of two evils," still trying to figure out if I should switch to a Dub addiction ... could be more costly in the long-run :p

I'd be ashamed if I couldn't spell "you" but hey, everyone has their demons...
=)
Drinking and driving is no worse than the myriad other stupid things people do when driving (modern temperance movement notwithstanding).

Whatever are you talking about? I'm an excellent driver as I sip my Starbucks while on the phone, reading my newspaper, and shaving with my left foot. :)

I'll chime in here with a tragic personal experience. Someone said "don't you know what you can do to someone else?" 20 years ago this month on the 28th, my younger sister (3 years old) was killed by a drunk driver. The guy had been up drinking all night at a bar and had posession of coke (not the kind in a red can) when he was arrested. I was asleep when the whole thing went down. The doctors say that was the only reason that I'm still around to type this.

So to answer the poll: Do I drink and drive? Nope. If I go out to get a little tipsy, I always make sure that I don't drive and that I have a ride home with someone sober.

One thing to remember. Drunk driving is not about hurting yourself, it is about hurting someone else. The drunk almost never gets hurt because how relaxed the body is during the crash. However the person that the drunk hits doesn't get the same benefit.

Don't call 'em accidents either they are a crash. An accident is something that can't be prevented. Drunk driving is preventable with responsible drinking.

[steps of soapbox]

Josh!

I am with Josh on this one. With my experience working as an EMT and working in the trauma dept at Palomar, it is never an accident when someone chooses to drink and drive.

Am I perfect? No, I did drive drunk once in high school. I will not drive if I have had even a little alcohol, it is just not worth the consequenses. Have you all seen what the penalty is now for DUI? (Steps off Josh's soapbox)

dont come on here like your shit don't stink, if your perfect than you can be the next incarnation of the mythical Christ, so your telling me you have one drink and you are unable to care for yourself? That makes you more dangerous than most of us because we can hold our liquor, I know my capabilities of how much I can drink before I can't drive, so I dont drive after I've passed my limit, but are you saying that never in your entire life you have driven after having one drink? even EGG NOG? champange at brunch? but people aren't perfect and as Alan said its just as dangeous as a chick who puts on her makeup on the freeway or the old guy who reads while he drives his cadillac on auto-pilot, but if you had read the posts and the poll, most of us don't or used to but learned our lesson. I learned mine and the people who haven't yet will, but its something you have to figure out on your own that no court ordered class can teach.

you know its funny the way so many people are upset and pissed off as they type.
i do reacll seeing hundreds of pics from the past Dubwars of people piss ass drunk. and i do recall a pic of a guy driving his car with a keg in the back. and by the looks on peoples faces they didnt seem to pissed off. you can still kill someone at 5-10mph.

so for those of you who dont drink and drive dont preach.
and those who do lets just be more careful and wiser about what we do.

yes i do drink and drive.

i love my car too much.

i am, however, guilty of drinking and driving in the ol' truck in the back woods of vermont. this is how it looked the next morning:

those were my crazy days though, try not to do that anymore.. too much of a pain in the ass trying to explain to my boss why there were mud clods stuck in the radiator :o

I dont drink while driving, stoli and cranberry is a bitch to get out of the upholsery,

when I was in high school we used to go out drinking alot and somehow I was driving my bug, we would dump the cans out through the rust holes in the floor pan, now that car was a trooper, had little whiskey dings all over it and mud packed in the fender wells from the impromtu runs in the highschools athletic field. Talk about days of my mis spent youth! I still have it and no sooner would I sell it then cut off my right arm, Its being turned into a turbo bracket racer!
