I bought my car used with 29,000 miles and have approx 34,000 miles. When I bought my car, I noticed the clutch felt alittle sloppy but nothing to serious. I was driving this morning and while leaving 3rd gear around 4,500 rpm i put it in 4th and gave it some gas. Noticed the rpm reved up rapidly and then let off, and then back on again. The rpm went up to 7000 rpm with no movement. It felt as if i were losing traction but only in 4th gear. I down shifted into 3rd and gave some gas and I gained no speed, as if I were in neutral. I then depressed the clutch and put it in neutral, pulled over and let off the clutch but it was stuck in the depressed position. It was gradually releasing from being engaged. I smelt burning clutch and popped the hood and smoke came racing out.. I turned the car off and let it sit for about 30 minutes and tried to see if it can operate again. I can move through each gear when the motor is off, but when running I cant force into any gear with clutch depressed... I am aware that my clutch is burnt, does anything else appear to be damaged? How much do new clutches cost and how much for install? sorry for the long read.

Don't know about costs for you car specifically, but it'll probably be kind of high.

Is there any chance your car is still under warranty?

If your clutch pedal stayed down, it sounds like a slave cylinder failure, which could have led to a burned clutch disc.

With an M3 the clutch is not cheap, if it cooked your DMF, it can cost upwards of $3000, you have to replace the entire kit, disc, self adjusting pressure plate, plastic pivot pin for the TO bearing arm. That last one is important. I have seen a few tech skip the $3 plastic pin, and it breaks not long after the new clutch is in. If you have an independent do it, pick a specific, well recomended BMW independant as it can require some special tools. The job pays 10-12 hours depending on what all is needed. Our labor rate is $130 an hour. Yours in SD at a dealer will be similar

Forget about warranty, they will not cover an M3 clutch, original owners bitch and bitch they will sometimes cover it under full maint. but thats a stretch on a second owner car. PM me the last seven of your VIN and I will run it throught BMW DCS and see if its had any gear box work done before you bought it and how much warranty is left besides the 6/100 on the motor

All German Auto in Escondido is honestly a great place to bring Bimmer. They definitely are the dealer alternative. Speak to Martin... and he will give you a straight up answer. no bull.

thats a cheap price for the clutch kit, but they wont know untill they get it apart, if it needs a flywheel, If the clutch is so far gone that it wont move, a flywheel is almost a given. Just makesure you buy that little pivot pin too.

you could upgrade the clutch if you are hard on it, but beware of lightened flywheels can cause an anoying rattle while at a stop light and it drives some people nuts

Google is a wonderful thing, search term = BMW Flywheel. ;) (Sorry been on Vortex quite a bit lately, and it makes me feel a little feisty sometimes.)

LOL, she missed the flywheel/clutch combo that you should get. ;)

UUC Motorwerks (http://www.uucmotorwerks.com/)

Check out their Stg 2 lightweight flywheel/clutch combo. They use a spring hub clutch to help prevent rattling. And it gets rid of the self-adjusting crap.

UUC makes some nice parts, but like I said, the flywheel can cause some rattling of the gears at idle in neutral

PM me your VIN and I will run it and see if you have any warranty or maint. left
