I have been wanting one ever since i was a kid, so tomorrow i am going to be looking at one that is going to need a full restoration in escondido, it doesnt come with an engine, (Concours doesnt matter to me), so im thinking a (1960-1965)Super 90 engine or a 356 SC engine,,,95 raw porsche horsepower...woohoooo :D

Niiiiice.

Kinda funny you mention this because I saw a fully restored black one down near veeparts in National City yesterday.

Those are hot cars, I'd love to get my hands on one.

95 horsepower is all you need in those things, they are so frickin light! Anyways, like Tony said, they are hot cars, what color are you going to paint it?

Don't do it! trust me on this one, buy one someone else has restored as a C is never worth as much as you will put into it, especially with a missing motor.

also forgot to mention even before I would buy it, i am going to get all the numbers that i can from the car to help me determine what model number, where built, etc....this car is a basic barn find

Did I mention if you don't get it, I would be interested in such a car ;)

Those things are pure pimp status. They are truley a work of automotive art.

i wonder how hard it would be and how much money to drop in a 1.8T engine and drivetrain from a fairly new beetle into the car

Heheh... I was just thinking the same thing.

It would be hard to do. It would leave the car terribly unbalanced because of the additional weight from the engine.

These things are money pits, pre-A and A's have great value, B's are good, all cabs are good, but base C coupes are a little bit of a tough sell as you can get one out of the auto trader running and solid for $5k and a nice one for $15k missing motors are bad, parts are getting hard to find and expensive, especially when you dont have the tin and other bits that add up, the last crank up motor (REBUILD) I did was for a 930, it cost him around $25K by the time I finished. I guess if you dont really care you can build a 150hp VW type 1 pretty cheap and run it if everything is there, like trim and gauges its a good deal for $500, you could sell the gauges for that. but I see them for sale all the time as half finished projects, mostly just a painted shell. good luck, PM me if you need parts or info?

Thats a good point... What model is this 356, 356A, 356B, or 356C? I would agree that the later models are not nearly as desirable.

this is all I could find in my books and catalogs.....are you sitting?
trans axle in rebuildable shape w/axels and brakes will probably run $750-$1000
clutch kit and flywheel $1200
Carbs and manifolds +linkage that is rebuild able $1000
crank (hard to find) $1500
pistons/ cyl. $1000
oil pump $250
main and rod bearings $600
cam and gear $600
engine gaskets $100
(hows that VW motor looking now?)
oil cooler $450
crank timing gear $NLA start hunting now
distributor $450
this isn't counting stuff like;
an engine case $1500?
rods $400?
heads, tin, oil filter $hahaha????? cant even gue$$
so you either find one that has been wrecked ( I know of one and he is probably going to rebuild it) for its runnig gear or swap in a 2.0 2.2 2.4 early 911 motor and five speed which is a lot of work and fun, or just go the route of spending $4-$5k on a built 200hp VW motor and trans
but get me the VIN and i'll run it for you
