Three friends check into a motel for the night and the clerk tells them the bill is $30, payable in advance. So, they each pay the clerk $10 and go to their room. A few minutes later, the clerk realizes he has made an error and overcharged the trio by $5. He asks the bellhop to return $5 to the 3 friends who had just checked in. The bellhop sees this as an opportunity to make $2 as he reasons that the three friends would have a tough time dividing $5 evenly among them; so he decides to tell them that the clerk made a mistake of only $3, giving a dollar back to each of the friends. He pockets the leftover $2 and goes home for the day! Now, each of the three friends gets a dollar back, thus they each paid $9 for the room which is a total of $27 for the night. We know the bellhop pocketed $2 and adding that to the $27, you get $29, not $30 which was originally spent. Where did the other dollar go?

He was hungry and stopped by the vending machine on his way up to their room to give them the money back hahaha!
j/k what I am thinking is this:
the price of the room after the clerk made the error is only $25/night, so after they each got the $1 back ($3 total) from the bellhop, it would seem as though they each spent $9 for a grand total of $27/night. But looking at what you wrote in the riddle, that they each paid $9 for the room for a total of $27 is actually not correct because if you think about it, forget the whole "$27" part. The price of the room is actually $25/night so adding the $3 that they got back from the bellhop gives you a total of $28, and the remaining $2 well that went to the bellhop giving a total of $30! Simple! I think it's a play on numbers and words that made it confusing and the fact that you threw in $27 there when it only added more to the confusion. Anyway, that's my logic...don't know if it's right but it does make sense, at least to me :p

$30 paid - $2 kept by the bellhop = $28.
they each paid $9.33 but didn't know it...

Hooray for elementary school arithmetic!
The logic on the addition and subtraction is wrong but most people don't notice right away beacause it sounds like it could be right.
They each paid 10 dollars then got 1 dollar back so thats 9 dollars a piece paid. There is no way around that unless youre Enron or MCI or something.
Its actually $30 paid - $5 refunded + $2 kept by bellhop = $27

Boy is that wrong...
If I give you a $10 and you come back and give me $1... Then how did I pay $9.33?
Play on words. You are asked the wrong question.
All that is paid from the 3 gentlemen is:
$27 which = $25 for the room + $2 tip

The real question is why are 3 guys sharing a $25/night room. I mean..seriously, buy your own room ya cheapskate!

Maybe they were at DubWars?
They saved 50 bucks on the two extra rooms.
Since each of them thought the room was 27. They saved 54 bucks for booze.
When they find out the bellhop jacked them for 2 dollars they are gonna beat his ass and get it back so they saved 56... where did the extra 6 dollars come from? :D

Sure, and then when it turns out one of them spent some time in Federal pound-you-in-the-ass prison and has a hankering to relive some of those good times, that $54 is going to look like a bargain.
