View Full Version : Oil Oil Everywhere... Why Not DIY?

I've seen several posts on here asking where to get Oil Changes done. Made me think, how many of us DIY as opposed to paying someone else. Also, why would you pay someone to do it when it's really just a drain plug and a filter are the only two things removed. But if you do go somewhere else, do tell why.

DIY. The less money spent on maintenance and repair labor, the easier our mod addictions are on the finances. ;)

I get it done at the dealership but bring my own oil for the simple fact as I live in an apartment and it is a big pain to have to cart everything down to the underground garage and work on my car. Plus for the $20 in labor the dealership charges to do it I would rather not spend a few hours hauling stuff up and down from my apartment.

Come to my place, we sneek you into the Auto Hobby shop on Miramar and only pay $4 and a California Burrito... :D

I actually pay someone. Not that I couldn't, but it usually requires time that I don't have to spare (or sometimes I'm downright lazy). Other than that, my car has never been to a shop for more than an alignment or to get something welded (turbo upgrade, coilovers, etc. all done by my friends and I).

I'm thinking about making the time these days, though.

i know how to do it. but i just can't find the time. i supply the oil and filter and i get it done while i'm working since we have a full service shop in the back.

1. No time.

2. With how picky VWOA is about maintaining the warranty on my Passat (10yr/100k powertrain), I would much rather have a receipt for any and all work done on the car, including oil changes with an acceptable oil at the suggested intervals.

I change my own oil, but I believe that VWOA will void my my warranty without the above information.

I do it myself. It gives me spend some time looking over the car and trying to spot any other developing problems.

I totally agree with that one. When I wash my car every other week it gives me a chance to eye-ball the brakes. On friday nights I pull into the garage to check the fluids, and oil changes are the chance to check everything I can see during my other 2 inspections.

I do it myself, at work, but if I had to do it at home and dispose of the oil, its not worth the $20-$25 bucks IMO.

Oil changes are what a dealer refers to as a "Loss Leader" meaning we lose money on the oil change to get you in the door in hopes of your car needing something, and lets face it, they ALL need something.

All you need to show is recepits for oil and filter, They CAN'T void your warranty for doing your servicing elsewhere, its illegal

yeah those are my two reasons as well. i was talking to one of the service techs and they were talking about how even if you change the oil yourself, they don't know that you are actually doing the work to the car. that's why i'd rather do it myself til the warrenty is over.

I do it myself cuz I'm a lube-tech at a Dealership... However, if I didn't have a rack to get my Corrado up in da air, yeah- I'd be too lazy to do it myself, haha- so then I'd have my dad or brother take it in to one of their dealerships...
