Disabling DRLs, saves on bulb replacements and sets it a little apart (though most VW owners probably think you burned them out). Free.

Rear fog light, sets it a little apart and is very useful in the rain/fog when you want a little more distance from the tailgater (they back off a bit when that red Cyclopean eye glares at them). $40 for the red lens (uses the same bulb).

Short-shifter, gets rid of the sloppy stock one, though some have a different opinion. Many brands, the big one being Dieselgeek, which has several varieties, each with their own feel. $50-300.

ECU fuel map update or "chip", best bang for buck. On a 2.0L it's even cheaper ($100-300), ups the torque to make it a fun drive in the city (folks who like big turbo power up top will never enjoy a trip to the grocery as much as a torqued up little engine).

Accessories that aren't part of the car:

VAG-COM, saves you money in the long run, makes you learn about the car's electronics, which in turn teach you about the mechanics. $100-$900 (http://ross-tech.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Category_Code=VAGCOM)

Pella oil extractor, siphons oil out via the dipstick tube, makes changing oil clean and efficient. Still have to go under for the filter (except for TDIs), but that's all you do down there. $38 (http://www.jerrybleach.com/pelaapplications.html)

You can get the fog light wiring kit from ECS Tuning www.ecstuning.com (http://www.ecstuning.com) part number ES#1251 I think it's about $14 plus shipping, includes one bulb and the wire to hook it up. If you want to get it I'll bring my spare connector wire and I think I have a spare bulb I can bring when I come down and we can hook up those when we do the front foglights.

I think law says you can only have the one on the driver side but until a cop stops me and confirms that I'm running both on my GTI since it makes the car that much easier to see.

Huh. I know it's better to have the Euro-light switch so you can control the rear fog individually, but after that it was just a matter of running a 20-gauge line to the rear and splicing it in while disconnecting the reverse signal wire. Don't need a new bulb since the lens gives it color. Or is this a different mod where you put in a red bulb?

It's mostly for Golfs/Jettas where you have to plug a wire with the correct socket on the end to the euroswitch plug, and another connection in the plug on the tail light side. The bulb is just a standard clear bulb that goes in the normally-empty socket of the left tail light cluster.

It's just an easier and cleaner way to hook it up than say getting the right wire ends from the dealer and splicing your own.

Since I also did the "4 brake light mod" I had to do some extra splicing of diodes to make everything work correctly with the rear fog.

Guys whats your fav mods and if they are free even better.
Sorry, not much is free.

1) tinted windows (if you don't have them already)

2) alloy wheels (if you don't have them already)

3) good tires, shocks, struts, and brakes.

4) seat covers (if you don't have leather)

5) bra to protect your front bumper and leading edge of hood from the effects of gravel and cement trucks

6) Then start under the hood.

7) Jettas can always benefit from upgraded lights. But these can be pricy.

The rest is bling. But sometimes bling is good.

Just take out the whole relay altogether.
I have a 95' and I haven't disabled them yet. I have a jetta front now, so I'm gonna disable them so I get more life out of the bulbs.
