I think they are intimidated by our mighty Fast and the all might VDub. Don't get me wrong the STi is a great car but they don't really need to belittle other car companies to sell their product.

Someone needs to get off the HaterAde. Subaru sales prob went down, considering an STI is far too over priced... So they go euro with the GTI... They are just jealous that they didnt come out with a Fast like caracter.
Haters. Makes me sik.

Heh.
I wonder if it's real.
Subaru does have a tradition of ads like that though.
When the SUV craze first started, they ran a series of ads showing really gnarly off-road terrain (sharp rocky fields, downed trees and the like) with a caption along the lines of "C'mon, are you really going to drive your $40,000 SUV through this?" and "For the price of one $40,000 "off-road" SUV, you could buy two Subarus".
Funny stuff.

hmm...well the STI is fast (0-60 in 4.7sec.) BUT ...heres the 3 reason i would take the a VW over a late blooming-trendy-ass Subaru:
1. Build quality
2. Reliability
3. ENGINEERING
id put styling too but....

Well put. It's OK though, at least they are reaching their target market.
And you'd think how ridiculous wings like that look on a STREET CAR.
I wonder if VW will come up with a creative/funny rebuttal.....?

The success of the Fast marketing campaign is what drove this ad. ;)

Exactly, you know you have a good product when you are in the crosshairs of the competition
Uh... subaru reliability > vw. hands down. build quality is there too, might not be the top grade materials but it's not a shoddy vehicle at all.
Engineering... that's a tough one, Subaru has more recently been at the top of the performance sedan category, although they don't release a lot of new technology like audi/vw does. DSG, FSI, CVT to name a few.
Subarus have better resale value, and shouldn't be knocked for reliablity. I'd trust a subaru over an audi/vw any day of the week for reliablity.

+1
I'd take a Legacy GT over a Jetta or Passat hands down. The GTi WAS a better looking car than the STi, now I don't know...

Agreed. VW and reliability is an oxymoron. Subaru haas been been putting out a really good product lately and as much as I like VW's the STI is an amaing car. 30 grand for what you get is a performance bargain.

yup I agree the subaru is going to last longer than the VW with all the problems we have. anyone see the consumer reports of used cars to avoid buying? Every damn VW model was listed

Wow... since when does Subie think they're the shit? I remember before the STi Subie was a humble little company like VW. But now I'm kinda embarassed to be associated with such and elitest group.

While I agree the STI is an awesome performance bargain, I just wonder why they feel the need to take a shot at VW when as far as I'm concerned, the GTI and STI are in totally different classes. If I want something as fast as an STI, I'd get an STI.
The GTI is a more refined sporty car. The STI on the other hand is a balls-out performance sedan. So why Subaru feels threatened enough to go after the GTI, I don't quite get it. I wouldn't expect the GTI to be taking that many sales away from the STI.

ok....well im not sure why subaru would be trying to take shots at VW's MkV GTI when they are two completely different cars in different categories. The STI is much faster and costs more. It's funny to see that a much more performance-oriented manufacturer would be threatened by VW (as stated earlier)..which most likely was the reason for this ad.
Reliability wise? I KNOW the MkIV VWs have a bad rep for reliability...i own one. But in general, since the beginning for example the MkI era, VWs have been very well made cars that last forever even after repeated abuse lol...we used to own many of the earlier models and my MkIV is our 6th VW. Now for Subaru, I have a friend whos family has owned pretty much ALL of the models (SVX, legacy, impreza...) and theyve had nothing but PROBLEMS. This could JUST be their bad luck, but what a coincidence.
And since when has subaru released anything thats been a hit before the STI?? At least here in US thats been the only car that's sold huge numbers that can even compete with VW sales.
I'm NOT trying to put down all STI owners out there...I LOVE the STI and in fact I'd buy it over the GTI. I just dislike the fact that everyones trashing VWs just because of the later MKIVs (whew.....that was long)

The GTI's start at 21,900 and the STI starts at 32,995, a better price comparison would be GTI vs WRX sedan.
Subaru is just using piggbacking off of VW's successful AD vampaingn. A low blow but that is buisiness.
And while were talking about Subaru the outback was not the first sport utility wagon, I believe AMC has that claim even though the term "sport utility wagon" wasn't coined yet.

Since when were Passats and Jettas performance sedans? Subaru may have some awsome cars, but VWs aren't comparable in performance. That's the way the engineers did it. But if i wanted a real "performance car", i wouldn't get a glorified Subura or Mitsu econo box.

Hmm, I didn't know they were that cheap.
I though when they came out, they were selling around the 28k range.
Or was that just dealer markup?

a fully-loaded GTI is around 28k
but it would be stupid to be cross-shopping a fully-loaded GTI with an STI because at that point they are two totally different cars.

Depends on how you shop for cars, I suppose.
Myself, I figure out a range on what I want to spend, say 25k-35k and look at every car that falls into that range.
Though, I was just looking at the VW website, is there no VR6 version? Only the 2.0T?

I agree with the VW guys. It is kinda dumb to compare the STi with the GTi... The WRX would be a better comparo. I think Subie should take a stab at Dodge's Caliber SRT-4 if anything.

That is correct, at least for the time being.
yeah, lets see subies game when the next R3X hits, hopefully VW comes to play with alot more power than last time

I used to love Subarus... and my friends were subie-heads... but back then having something STI was original/rare and looked up to. Now I think like 40% of our marines have blue STI WRXs (exaggeration) and I remember the big AWJunkies meet being FULL of them....
I was excited when the car came out, but wouldn't want one due to the simple fact that I don't wanna feel pressured to 'flex nuts' every time someone who reads Sport Compact Car pulls up beside me.
Also, indirectly attacking another company's ad campaign is a way of showing that your constituants (potential customers) may have that type of mentality.
You might see a light-hearted BMW or AUDI ad playng with the idea of an imaginary 'fasi-like' creature, but I would be disappointed if they made such a direct and bitter comment.
when it comes down to it.... I think that ad makes subie drivers look bad (even though some *not all* of them don't need help with that)
I miss "The power of All Wheel Drive." THAT was a classy and strong statement. Subie has been whoring out slogan ideas that are sub-par ever since.

I agree about the Comminality (even a word) the WRX and STi have become. Hence the reason I'm going to spend 5k on an STi 6MT into my SVX rather than drive something there are 30 of at the AWJ meets. My Pearl SVX is exactly what Subie was about. A kinda ugly yet interesting car that not many people owned.
I do like the look of the 06 Impreza best out of all Imprezas. Best lines, not wack ass front end or F-ed up hood scoop.
As for the STi being a suped up "Econo-box" thats not really true. The base Impreza is far from an "econo-box". Subie and VW are very similar in the fact that almost all their models are very nicely done with a great fit and finish. Thats why I like both VW and Subie. They follow almost the same ideals about cars, or used to atleast. Reliability, fun, and driving used to drive both companies. But now price and RICERS have killed that. But I still feel deep down Subie still is a "drivers" company as is VW. They both produce awesome little pocket rockets (GTI-WRX) and have some sweet ass performance SUVs (Outback/Forester-Tourage) and Family cars (Legacy GT-Passat 2.0T/W8). There my "Pro-VW/Subie coalition" rant is over...

I think that since stock VWs lack the real performance (even the r32) they made up Fast to kinda make people feel that they are getting a fast car, along with those new vw commercials.. yeah right, great marketing skills.. but i still don't understand why would subaru even worry about that enough to make that add.. the cars are in 2 different classes and made for totally different things.. even the new r32 will not be a good competitor for the STi...they should worry more about the new evos...
