a friend of mine is thinking about getting a mk4 diesel jetta and then converting it to a bio-diesel. Is it a hard thing to do? and what are the pros and cons compaired to regular diesel?
any thoughts would help out

not sure what needs to be converted on the jetta, but I saw a show where the host made his own diesel fuel and didn't convert anything on the F350 he was using. The site says zero modification to motor.

A MkIV TDI requires ZERO conversion. Just fill 'er up and go.
Hell, you can mix regular disel with biodiesel.

French fries, indeed. A have a friend with a Golf TDI who started a biodiesel co-op out here in West LA (they house the tanker in a parking lot in Culver City, of which 30 folks chipped in to keep filled up), and that fries smell is right there with him.

Eric Dow put a greasel kit on his TDI beetle, ran it on In&Out fry grease. All it took was a tank for the biodiesel and a filter. He ran a pump switch too, so he could go from the normal tank to biodiesel when he wanted to.
Incidentally, he's one of the drivers for this VW event that's going on, where they're driving a bunch of TDI touaregs from Alaska to Argentina purely on biodiesel.

Autoweek just ran a couple of articles about deisel and fuel economy. A Mk5 TDI Jetta whupped a Toyata Prius in overall MPG. They also talked about Shell's new synthetic deisel, v-power, which is being run by the R10. It doesn't smell like deisel or french fries.
