Yes they do. I personally use Royal Purple in my Subie and Mobil one in the "family" car.

check out royalpurple.com... They sell the full line of products at the MiraMar Autoport.
All the tests that have been done have shown a gain in HP and reduction of drag.

It is actually a VW approved motor oil
Militec M1 for the actions on the .22lr actions, and rig grease on the sig... oh you mean the car.
Mobil 1 for convenience.

so is royal purple a synthetic oil or standard weight

If you plan on being consistent with the brand and weight then go with Mobil 0w40 for the simple fact that you can find it anywhere. The others are equally good or marginally better (they could be loads better but you'll never see why if you change the oil before 10k), but Mobil 0w40 is in every Autozone, Kragen, Pep Boys and insert-auto-store-chain-name-here.
Or you could order the stuff by the boxes online, like Amsoil. I'd do that, only I don't have a garage to store the stuff, so I just use Mobil.

Personal opinion: unless you plan on keeping the oil for 15-20k, getting anything expensive is pampering the car. Now granted, if you want to pamper your car, pamper your car. But putting synthetic of ANY brand in and changing it out every 5k/6 months is already pampering it without having to spend more on a fancy brand. Regular oil technology alone, when changed every 5k, will work just fine. But we pamper because we care -- it's just subjective as to how much pampering your car deserves.

roger that
another myth, synthetic doesnt really protect better than non ... but it does withstand heat and tends to last longer
however, if you do change your oil every 3-5k regularly, then doesnt really matter

You should try Tetra, I use it on my M14 clone and Glock 29 and it works great. Militec M1 is good stuff also, I was just surprised to see rust on a part a week after I oiled it. Speaking of which I need to clean up my dad's M1 and HK this week.
As for oil in my car I don't have a clue, whatever VW Corona uses.

Ok.. now from the master... if you want your engine to make it past 200k..

Unlike regular synthetic oil, MaxLife Synthetic is advanced synthetic PLUS special additives to fight the effects of aging. If you use synthetic motor oil in your engine and it has 75,000 miles or more, then MaxLife Synthetic is right for you!
MaxLife Synthetic helps extend the life of engines by providing:
* Special seal conditioners to help keep engines cleaner and reduce oil consumption
* Additional anti-wear additives to reduce friction and help prevent future wear
* Extra cleaning agents to help reduce deposits, sludge and varnish formation
* Advanced thermal stability to help reduce oil burn-off and maximize power output

Mobil 1 10w30 or 10w40.
On my 30v A4(notorious sludge engines) and my 12v Vr6 Turbo:
It's my personal belief that all turbo cars should be run on synthetic and the oil changed at least every 5k. Here in the desert with the sand you'll want to stay on top of the filter and oil changes and tap out the air filter once a month. It can get real nasty as I've learned.

You would really use a 10w30 in those engines? I don't know, that doesn't seem right.
I think I would stick with a good Mobil 1 0w40 or 5w40. And that is also what I'd recommend for the OP's 2.0. (The M1 0w40 meets the VW505.00 specification, which in the owners manual is strongly recommended.)

I wouldn't go as thin as 0w except in the harshest conditions- very, very cold and even then I would be wary. Of course you'll want to go with what your manual recommends over some internet guy so I won't waste too much time trying to convince you. :) In the harshest winters, -30 at times, I never went thinner than 5w30. I can't imagine running an even thinner oil in temperatures 130-150 degrees warmer! -now that just doesn't sound right. There is a lot of theory and it comes down to what you believe. When you don't know any better, stick with what the manual tells you.

VW specifies 5w30 as optimal, so 0w40 more than covers it. Besides, it may be thin, but it's a fancy technoligically-laden thin.
:D
In all seriousness, our basic knowledge of the properties of motor oil are out of date when concerning the new synthetics (or even the new regulars). Consider that new cars have engines that require oil changes every 20-25k miles. It is not necessarily so much the engine as the oil (the engine is, when you get down to it, a big block of metal -- it might be aluminum, but on the whole the damn thing is still an inefficient four-stroke piece of crap that only makes use of 20% of the energy burned.. on turbos it's a bit better, since we use the exhaust to spin the fan, but just a bit). Sure, better block building, better piston design with finer limits, but on the whole, oil tech has progressed much, much quicker.

I prefer my oil to be made out of ex-dinosaurs.
It's like recycling but on a epic timeline...

Actually I have heard that the properties of Syn oil keep it from completely draining off of the upper moving parts of the engine, thus providing more protection at startup as opposed to non-syn oil.
Correct me if I am wrong.
