Next generation Subaru Impreza designed to fight GTI!

The 2008 Subaru Impreza will target the Volkswagen Golf GTI, according to a report by AutoExpress magazine. The article indicates that a sedan model will no longer be offered, and selection will be limited to three- and five-door hatchbacks. Entry-level models will get a 2.0-liter naturally aspirated boxer engine with 170 horsepower. A more powerful STi turbocharged model will offer 300 horsepower. According to the report, the car will be quite similar to the Subaru B5-TPH Concept, but with a slightly more typical rear end. The glass hatch, however, remains.

Exactly... I can't even see it on the WRC. Atleast the Peugot, Citron, and skodas are sweet looking hatches... this... an abomination to the name Subaru.

Too bad Mitsu pulled out of the WRC and Subie has won more rallys so really its Subie > Mitsu. ;)

I have a feeling that is the main reason why they are changing it. If you look at the WRC standings the top two cars are hatches. If you can't beat em join em.

Yesterday, we told you about a report in the latest issue of Britain’s AutoExpress magazine that suggested the next Subaru Impreza would be designed after the Subaru B5-TPH Concept. This came as a disappointment to many Subaru fans who weren’t too keen on the look. Well, it turns out the next Impreza won’t borrow from the B5 that heavily — at least according to the insiders at AutoExpress. We obtained a cover scan from the magazine. It depicts an artist’s impression of how the new Impreza will look, based on spy photos and rumors. It shares some elements with the B5, but not as much as some had feared. Image after the jump…
