go to the dealship and get a MK3 license holder, i dont have a pic of mine... but its basically what your asking for. might have to retrofit it a little to somehow hook to your bumper but they work good.

Some of the TT guys are using silcone to put magnets behined the bumper then putting some on the plate with little felt feet on them so they can pull the plate on and off

i just saw a red vw that had his license plate mount coming out of the DS duct. looks clean, jason mentioned it was welded to something.

clever but..
bad idea... the magnet will f' up the paint. some thing about the magnet that eats the paint. you will notice a color diffence
same thing happens to the magnetic graphics when u put them on the paint

Some metal from Homedepot, some screw/bolts, a dremmel and some JB weld worked for me.
I have no DIY on this. I just dove in and learned as I went. Took about 2 hours.

Haven't heard any complaints from the guys using them. They don't have any sort of wierd paint jobs though.
Could it have just been fading that you were experiencing?

its kindof hard to explain... its almost like that metal wants to come through the paint and it lifts the paint off...
you just dont what to hav eit on the paint for long

the magnets will pic up metal road debris and when you put ur plate on it will scratch...its not major pieces..so small u probly can t see it, but enough to do a buff job on your paint...pic up a plain magnet and look at what little things it pics up..now imagine driving around what nonsense will stick to it....
