Hi everybody,
ok i finally finished my project. My mkII gti VR6 is ready to roll out of the garage.
Now i have to get it smoged. I am living in the states since 2004 and never had to get a car smoged so I really don't know what this is all about, well let's say very little.
What are they checking for besides emissions?
The car has got a stock vr6 engine. What gives me headaches is the fact that the interior is completely removed. Could that be major trouble?
Basically what i need is someone who would look at the car and tells me what i need to do in order to pass smog requirements.
Since your motor is completely stock you should have no problems passing smog.

Since your motor is completely stock you should have no problems passing smog.
As long as you have all the emission components hooked up you should be fine. Interior doesn't matter at all. THey just do a visual inspection of the engine to see that you have all the proper stuff hooked up and then run it on the dyno to test it.
what year motor is it? It will have to have ALL the smog stuff, so if its an OBDI, than not very much stuff is on an obdI car.
OBDII and it will have to have the EVAP system, Secondary air, cat, post cat o2 sensor, check engine light (did you use the MK3 cluster?) to name a few
Then you have to visit the ref and get the sticker on your door jamb if everything passes. If not, it can be a pain and cost you plenty of money

:) Thanks guys that makes me feel better. Yes the engine is stock. The only questionable thing is the K&N filter. Any tips? or should i just try?

Well let me clean the patient. She (my car is a female, how else could i love her?) still has blood all over after surgery. But i promise pictures will follow once she is polished and the scars are healed up.
Mike, yes i took the MKIII cluster like everything else from a 1997 jetta so it is obdII. What is "ref" ?

How long did your swap take.

They won't even check your filter unless you have a CAI without a arb sticker. If your filter is in the box don't even worry about it
Opps I just read your post again and saw you did a VR6 swap in your MKII.
Like mike said you will have to bring it to a smog ref first to get the swap CARB approved then getting the smog done will be no problem.

Oh i see, so there is some special procedure i will have to go through? But what is this smog ref? is there someone out there who has done that and could tell me?
Ravenjetta, that is the problem the filter is not in a box, its an open cone.
16V-Fast, it took a while since it was my first swap but assuming you have the money it dosn't take more than a half a year. It really depends how motivated you are. You could even do it in two weeks with all the parts available.

Since it is an open cone I don't think that will pass unless it has a carb sticker. Will probably fail on visual inspection. Do you have the stock VR6 air box?

:( no i never got the stock air-box. Well the K&N shipping box said carb exempt on it but i can't see any sticker on the filter itself.

You'll have to make sure all of the stock smog related parts from the VR6 are on the car, before you see the smog referee. Here's (http://www.jagsthatrun.com/Pages/Chevrolet_S-10_V-8_Smog.html) a page with some good generic info.

if the vr6 uses the same airbox setup as the 1.8t i have one lying around you can use for the smog test. .not too familiar with the vr6 setup tho
scratch that, i just realized you did the mkiii vr6 swap, i have the mkiv box :)

Thanks for the website. Now i guess i have to get the stock airbox and find a referee station and make an appointment. Is anyone out there who has an airbox (stock 1997 VR6) ? Don't like to buy a new one.
So the DMV could tell me where to find a referee station? or do they have ads in the yellow pages.
The whole thing is that i really don't mind to pay some money but i want it done right and legally.
