i wanna know what the pros/cons of this is so i can rub it in his face when he is done (i told him not to but he is still going to do it) he owns a 1998 1.8t quattro 5speed and well he thinks it will be fine if he just cuts off a coil or 2, i wanna know if anyone has done this or if it can even be done... if this is in the wrong thread, sorry and you can move it but dont lock it yo.

its only cons when cutting springs, cuz the stock springs ahace a certain spring rate which
balance the ride when you cut it the ride is going to get bad. rocking back and forth like your riding a horse and the handling will be worst then stock.
that what the honda guys did back in the day cutting they're spring to slam the car
so just tell your friend just save up and get springs or coilovers

yea i told him all that but he dont care his mommy bought the car for him and he is tooo lazy to get a job and buy lowering springs...he dont race the car or anything like that, he just gos on road trips and to work, school, etc.. so handling dont realy matter to him and i told him about the shity ride too but he's "used to it" cuz he used to drive a accord with cheap ebay coilovers on it LOL so he's going to cut them... and well if anyone has done this on a a4 or anything thats close to that let me know the out come so i can be like "i told you so"

tell him to look up linear vs progressive spring rates.

also have him look at pics online of the stock springs vs aftermarket springs. if he doesn't see a difference, let him learn the hard way.

Pros:
- Cheap.
- Nothing to buy (unless you don't have an angle grinder to quickly cut them).

Cons:
- Unless shocks/struts are fine for the shorter stroke, the damping will be improper, and ride poorly and/or harsh.
- Not stiff enough to compensate for the shorter travel, so the chances of bottoming out greatly increases.

make sure he comes to a gtg..... and make sure you get everyone to point and laugh

Well at least for the front coils, if you cut it, the springs won't seat correctly anymore. The spring winding isn't the same diameter, so when you cut the end off, it won't fit on the perch the correct way.

The rear will fit the same, assuming you cut the right end.

The ride will be horrible and you'll more than likely ruin the shocks and bumpstops.

He thinks he's saving money, but it will end up costing him much more in the long run.

Aren't springs sometimes just $150? He can't scrape together that much? It's a pair of Nikes!

Then you have to get shocks wich are (going from my make/model)
about $500 for shocks.

Comeing from your guys metality, might as well cut the springs if you're just
getting springs and no shocks.

Not necessarily. There are mild springs out there as stiff or only slightly stiffer than stock.

Of course, the bottom line is he should save up $500-600 for a complete set and endure the stock quattro setup, which isn't exactly a tough thing to endure.

In short, your friend is an idiot.

Sorry.

Pointing and laughing is often the correct response to most things.
