ONCE AGAIN....after having a new starter and battery installed last week!!! last week! and having the car for maybe a week working perfectly well i come to start it this morning and compely shot it turns over and u can hear the starter tryin to do its thing but nothin so me and my buddy tried push starting it and that didnt work so i took it to the shop and they took a look at it and he said hes got no clue and he needs more time to work on it and and find out wats wrong. he did say it might possibly be the timing chain or somthin else that goes along with the chain but he wouldnt know till he goes through each and everything. but he called rite now sayin there still tryin to figure it out so yea..then i told him that we tried push starting it and he was like great that might of messed somthin else up...
but im curious cuz i thot it wasnt bad to push start a car??? see now im kinda screwed cuz he might try to use that towards his adv. im not sayin i dont trust him and ill give him the benifit of the doubt so yea...

Hmm, sounds like an open circuit draining the battery. Did they test the battery?
JETTAone420
06-13-2006, 07:11 PM
yea and the batter ywas drained...he said that when the tow truck guy dropped the car off he noticed that the stereo was left on even tho the key was off...but i got a brand new optima battery i highly doubt taht it would drain it within an hour's time

the dude at the shop said that he was thinking it was somthing electrical until i mentioned that we tried to push start it tehn he started talkin about timing chains and stuff

This a 1.8t or 2.0? With all these problems, I suggest you invest in a vag-com and start diagnosing your own problems. It'll save you money in the long run, or at least keep you from getting ripped off.

its a vr6 and ive thought about it but with all these damn problems ive been havin the past 2years of having the car its slowly a convincing fact that i might just wanna trade in for a diff car

You mentioned you left the radio on for an hour, but is it the stocker? Did you upgrade the system?
I had a problem like that where I kept frying my alternator. It turned out I had a short in one of my amps that was draining the system.
Good luck!

if the battery is really weak, it wont start even when you try to push start it. It wont run the fuel pump, injectors ect. That and the alternator isnt getting a 12V signal to start charging. So, sounds to me like.... well, I dont know this mechanic. But he sounds like he might not be experienced but im only hearing some of it. For all I know, he already checked the items I would have.

Sorry to hear that. And they thought by changing parts they fix the problem. Couldn't believe that from the beginning and now they talk you into the timing chain ( which is by the way not only one ) BULLSHIT. Throw that f*&%g sound system out and you are fine. You can push-start your car 2 days down the road and it wouldn't start if the battery is empty but it also wouldn't cause anything other than a toasted CAT or screwed spark plugs.
Next time hook up an amp meter and see how much current is going through the positive battery cable while the ignition is off and check how much voltage is supplied to the battery while you have the car running and the sound sytem on full blast.
Sorry for the hard words but it makes me angry to see how they fool you. I believe they didn't know what they were doing in the first place.
I hope you won't have to pay again ( so much ). I keep my fingers crossed

well originally they did fix it withthe new starter/battery. and wehn the tow truck dude first heard how it was soundin when i tried startin it he immediatly said it was the belt. then when i told that to the mechanic dude he was like vw's run off the timing chain but come to think of it they got serpintine belts rite? cuz i remember i had that replaced back in january. now he didnt say it was the timing chain he just said it might be.........i just find it interesting how once i mentioned to him that i tried to push start it like he compleltly changed his tone in makin it sound like that was the problem

VR6's do have a serpentine belt which powers the alternator, water pump and power steering pump. The timing chain is just for what it sounds like, timing. It sounds like the mechanic is just trying to make excuses now about why the car is messed up and rather than trying to find the problem is just throwing parts at it. IMHO the car probably worked fine after you got it back and then you hooked up the system again which drained the battery because you have a short somewhere and here you are agin. Recharge the battery and pull the system and give that a try.

Exactly, don't let them play with your car too much. They don't know what the problem is. I know it could be a hassle but maybe it's better to bring the car somewhere else. And leave the stereo disconnected.

well as of rite now i cant even get the car on so takin it somewhere else is gonna be difficult unless i called AAA and told them to tow the car across the street to the vw dealership?
RavinJetta
06-14-2006, 09:41 AM
Did you charge the battery before you had it towed to see if it would start with a full charge?
JETTAone420
06-14-2006, 10:42 AM
ya know wat i didnt even chck to see if the battery was dead when they towed it...i assume it was still good cuz when i tried turnin it over none of the lights flashed or ticked like they did last time the battery was dead but the dude did say he put the battery on the charger and it still wouldnt start
RavinJetta

If you battery was really dead it might not click or things light up. Do you have a voltmeter? They are pretty cheap and are a great help in figuring out battery and draining issues.

k i just got back from the shop to drop off my new tail lights and the mechanic said that this mornin when he tried to start it it started right there like nothing was wrong with it. and he let it run for about 30secondes then it just compleltly stalled on its own and after that he couldnt get it to start again. when iasked him about the vag he said the scans dont show anything wrong with the car. he also said that it might be either a computer, coils, ignition switch. o yea and ill prob be lucky if my car is able to be fixed by thisweekend...hwich is booboo cuz i wanna go to temecula!!!!!!!!!

Dude just do a standy by parasitic draw test on your batter with and without the amp power wire connected. Then any other variable (electronic part you've added that may have an open circuit). Through that you can determine if any amps are being pulled.

All you need is a volt/ohm meter(like 4bucks at Harbor Freight tools)

just got off the phone with the mechanic and wow! he said from the tests he was able to run the coilpacks are good but the ecu he said is completly fried and i need new spark plugs but yea when he quoted me on parts and labor itwas like 1,000$ and some change. now i know ecu's dont cost that much and he said he could get a new or used one....so yea, isnt there a guy on here that works at parts4vw???? maybe i can get a hook up
sandiegobmx

If he scanned the car earlier, it's not "completely fried."
I suggest you take the car somewhere else.

ECU's are very very expensive and don't usually get fried. This guy doesn't sound too good at all the more and more you tell us. You seriously need to take your car to somewhere else.

Seems like this guy is just bending you over. And it sounds like you're letting him...
