Hi,

Im new to this whole VW forum thing, but seems like a good place to ask a VW question...

I have a deposit down on a 2001 Jetta Wagon (2.0L petrol) at a dealer here in Vancouver, BC, Canada. The car has been imported from California and has 125,000 miles on the clock. I didnt notice this at first, thinking the speedo read in Kms like canadian cars. (I was happy with 125,000kms!)

Anyway, is this a high milage for a californian car? The car itself is in great visual condition, and Ive had it checked by BCAA's Vehicle Inspection service which showed no mechanical problems. The dealer says the milege has all been 'highway miles' which could be true or could be a selling ploy! They want CA$11,800 + taxes for it......which is a good price for a Jetta of this year/condition so must be due to the high miles.

Any advice/feedback would be appreciated, I need to make a decision asap but am worried that with that milage Im buying into a lemon! Im originally from the UK where cars with that milage are considered high, but we drive on short stop/start journeys which wears the car down quickly. I dont know what californian cars are like.

thanks
Murray

I really don't know. Your best bet is to Check Kelly Blue Book and type in 92145 for a zip. That will give you a good idea. Also I have to agree with gti20ae. 125,000 miles on a car is a big chunk. The car other than that best be perfect.

so it seems you're both saying 125,000 miles is high even if it is highway mileage. The car is in perfect nick apart from this. Kelly Blue book says $9,905 which is roughly CA$11,100. Close to the asking price....

If you can get them to drop down to KBB is sounds like it's an ok deal. But pay special attention to the maintance records and make sure you get some kind or warranty. If routine maintenance is up to date and they can sell it for KBB at most. then it sounds good.

but n the other hand, i do the smog checks i see lots of cars everyday ive seen 2.0 engines with 180xxx and even 200xxx miles on the odo. i think it depends on how you treat your car and if you do services on it

not worth it man you can find a better used deal- better off finding a vw with a warranty just in case you have any major issues within the first year or two

I got my 2000 jetta gls two years ago yesterday (June 14, 2004). it had about 32k on it. At the time, KBB said SRV was $14,999. I got it for $10,999 with the two-year extended warranty.

I just passed my 50,000 mile mark last week.

I have a 2001 jetta. It has 51000 miles. Just depends on how much you drive and if you have only 1 car or two.

Highway miles in CA is a lot different than highway miles in the rest of the world.
Just because you're on a highway in CA doesn't mean you aren't doing the stop and go thing. heh.

With that said, 125k in 5 years is only 25k a year.
It's not a excessive amount if you have a long commute or take several trips a year.
If the car is in good visual shape with no mechanical problems, it's probably a good deal.
