Well, "German Sheppard size" is considered a large breed.
It depends on a few things. How big is your yard/house?

Take a gander at the dogs up for adoption at the animal shelters. Alot of Pit Bulls but there are other breeds as well. Some breeds are easier than others to take care of. It just depends on what you want.

You have to go to an animal shelter. First off you'll be saving a dog. Second off it's very cheap. Third they have a ton of dogs to choose from. Good luck.

Go and get a book on breeds and learn a little about different breeds' needs, behaviors etc. Some need more exercise or attention than others. Some are harder to maintain. Based on you personality, and the living situation etc, choose a dog that you like that fits with your lifestyle. Then go to a shelter preferably, or if you really want a pure breed, research breeders and find one, but don't go to the pet store.

There are also breed-specific rescue organizations... so you'll be getting a pure breed that has been saved from poor conditions, and rehabilitated and trained.

Agree with all of the above. Rescue, don't buy. You can never go wrong with a Lab, IMHO.

until recently, we had a potuguese water dog....awsome dog!

he was incredibly smart and kind of a trickster!....you'd be surprised just how smart these dogs can be!.....these dogs were originally fishing dogs on portuguese ships and actually have webbed feet and can even dive under water for minutes at a time!

they are retrievers by nature and are GREAT with kids and other people....my doggie was around my little siter since she was about two years old and he was great at taking care of her and was very protective of my mother as well...also, they don't shed so you don't have to worry about having hair all over the place!

they aren't very common but they are gaining in popularity (only about 1000 were around in the US in 1970....that number is much higher now)....

Now it's Spanish Water Dogs gaining popularity. (very slowly) I'm waiting for a litter of SWDs in Oregon. I will hopefully get one of the puppies out of that litter.

But for JETTAone420's question, German Sheps are big. They're cool, but if you want something not big, a GS isn't the way to go. If you're not partial to one particular breed, just go to a shelter and take a look. You don't even need to know (right then) what kind you're looking at. If it looks like it fits what you had in mind, and it isn't gnawing through the bars of the cage, you're just a small fee away from a new dog.

I say Yellow Lab. A great overall family dog that is great around kids.

It's a great dane/ lab mix. Well I honestly don't know how popular a mix like that is but i haven't seen a single one like her yet. My suggestion is.. look for great dane and lab rescue stations if anyone has something like that than these places. Getting a puppie cood be really hard but she was only 7-8 month old when i got her. But ...carefull this dog is almost as big as a great dane and on the other hand a complete Labrador ( A horse which wants your attention ).
Good luck. I will keep my eyes open and let you know if i see something simular

What's your transportation like? If you don't have a big wagon/van/etc., then tend towards one sized like Ralphie ...

3 yr. old:

(Chihuahua-Terrier)

... and not like Raider.

6 months old:

(Mastiff)

-- Kane ... he's actually even bigger now.
