monsoon is set up for 2 ohms, basic system is 4 ohms. speakers are riveted on. you must drill them out. you can use aluminum rivets or screws to put them back on.

I've been wanting to do this too. I have the Gamma V headunit which is a head unit only found in europe and is better than the monsoon head units. Once I change the soft coding on it, it should sound even better on my stock speakers. Anyways, I've read that it's worthless if you don't change the amp and put a better head unit in. Changing them out should'nt be too hard.

Not sure if this tells you anything, but within about 2 months of owning my car, I ripped out the Monsoon speakers and replaced them with aftermarket ones ...
If I were you, I'd hold off on the Monsoons. Just get a new headunit and some decent aftermarket components. You'll be better off.

This only happens to people who connect the K-line that goes into the stock radio to the +12 that an aftermarket has in the same spot. Things work great until someone plugs in a scan tool. You can avoid this by using a wire harness designed for the car, such as the one Crutchfield sells with its radios (the number one reason to buy from Crutchfield is that they provide all the necessary mounts and connections).
Newer radios with double-DIN premium radios have CAN high and low instead of a K-line. Again, these should not be connected to an aftermarket radio.
Also note that an aftermarket radio throws codes in the ECU if you try to scan it for the simple reason that only the stock radio can reply to the scan tool. Don't scan the radio if it's aftermarket. Why are you scanning the radio in the first place, anyway?

Thanks for filling out everything I was about to say and saving me the time. ;)
Like Linus said, if you order from Crutchfield (or make sure the harness you get is correctly wired), you won't have any problems. The only issue you probably will have is that when you VAG your car and scan the CAN-BUS or ECU, it'll complain "No communication from radio" but that's obvious since you no longer have the stock radio. It's not anything that will throw a CEL or anything. Hell, even with OEM Nav I throw the "no communication from radio" code but it has no effect on the car.

hey Doo... get rid of the stocks... I had my stock speakers and deck for about 2 days.
Went to Tweeter, and a friend of mine hooked it up on a deck and speakers, and tweeters. :D I'm happy with the sound. Shortly after, I got an amp and a sub. VERY pleased with my sound system.
