View Full Version : EMP Stewart Water Pump

Since the UUC Pulley modification ended up being a scrubbed mission....and
after reading much about the catastrophic results of having an OEM water pump failure with a plastic impeller, I am now seriously contemplating of replacing my OEM Water Pump with a EMP Stewart High Performance Water Pump.
Based upon the model and production date of my e36, it is more than likely that I have the upgraded water pump with a metal impeller, and not the infamous plastic one. Since I am not 110% sure of what my stock water pump is, and if it has a plastic impeller or not, I'm thinking of still going through with this upgrade.
I know that there are other Water Pumps out there with metal impellers that are about 1/3 the cost of the Stewart WP. However, after reviewing the EMP SWP specifications and looking at its construction, the dam thing almost looks indestructable, and that's what I'm talking about....
So, if any of you have done this upgrade, I was just curious of your vehicle's performance, was there a noticeable improvement? (with respect to the cooling, engine temperature, etc. etc...)
Here are a few pics of it...

Unfortunately, this part wasn't widely available until a few weeks after I rebuilt my entire cooling system. I'll be installing one when I pull my head. The indestructability of the part and the fact it can be rebuilt is what interests me.
So far, I haven't had a problem with cooling, and she was out on the track after the overhaul, pushed to the limits 3 sessions back to back at one point (by myself and friends). I'm running the Zionsville full aluminum radiator, composite water pump, aluminum housing, new thermostat, samco upper and lower rad hoses, and fan delete kit with redline water wetter. Even with the fan delete, she does great every day driving out to work and back in Lakeside.
The BMW water pump has gone through three revisions - plastic, metal, and composite. The metal ones have their own problems, and even the newest composite ones aren't immune to failure. That's why I'll be getting one of these. Last thing I want to worry about is having my cooling system crap out and making the head gasket fail, or worse. The cooling system is definitely the weakest link with the e36.
So yeah, go for it, just for the piece of mind.
Do the thermostat housing, thermostat, and hoses while you're at it. And remember, only ever use BMW coolant. I saw first hand what non-BMW coolant sludge looks like.

We've had a couple in here and they are definitely a nice piece compared to the metal and plastic water pumps. The metal impeller pumps seem incredibly flimsy with cheap tack welds everywhere. It really is a crummy design. The SW pumps on the other hand are definetly built from the ground up and a very solid pump.

Well, I just checked UPS tracking on my EMP WP, and it appears that it is scheduled for a Tuesday delivery. Oh well, it looks like I will not be able to have it installed this weekend :( ....I will try for a Wednesday morning install....

Well, got my EMP WP yesterday, and after examining the part, I can honestly say that its construction is quite impressive over the OEM part.
So tomorrow morning is the day. I will be taking my car to a mechanic to have it installed. Also, since my cooling system will be going through a retofit. I decided to also get all the necessary hardware to do the FAN MOD (delete)...Hope all goes well...:D

Hey...I'm back from Creative Autoworks...
The the EMP WP is now installed, as well as the fan delete :D :D
If anyone would care to know, the service was "Excellent"
It is a great shop with a huge service bay area. It is also, conveniently located....
It is more than likely that I will be returning to Creative Autoworks for both regular maintenance items, as well as other miscellaneous vehicle upgrades...
Yo Alex, if you wondering, I drove the BMW back home and picked up the JEEP :D ...I am now back in the office, and for your informaiton, it was long meeting I had in San Marcos, LOL
