Roadster A Go-Go: Volkswagen confirms it will build Concept R show car

Volkswagen’s stylish Concept R show car, named AutoWeek’s “Most Fun” car at last September’s Frankfurt motor show (AW, Sept. 22), is going into production.
The mid-engined roadster, conceived as a cut-price alternative to the Porsche Boxster, is slated for launch in late 2007 with the choice of either four or six-cylinder power, according to Wolfsburg insiders.

VW chairman Bernd Pischetsrieder all but confirmed plans when he stated recently that the German automaker plans to bolster its niche market potential in future years rather than relying on traditional volume sellers like the Polo, Jetta and Passat. In a report in Auto Motor und Sport, Pischetsrieder said “the roadster will be built” as a mid-engined model like the concept for proper balance and to more easily meet coming Euro pedestrian crash standards.

Mechanical details remain scarce, though it is likely the roadster will use suspension components from both the Polo and Golf. Three different gasoline engines could be used: a 2.0-liter, 148-hp four, the 2.0-liter, 197-hp turbocharged four-cylinder FSI from the soon-to-be-launched GTI, and a 3.6-liter, 280-hp V6 due out next year as the replacement for the engine in today’s Passat. The mid-mounted engines would come with either a standard six-speed manual or optional direct shift gearbox with steering wheel-mounted paddles.

I still can't believe thats not an Audi. Its hot and all but I have a feeling it will have the same reception the S2000 had. The S2000 is an absolutely amazing car but there were a great number of people that were unwilling to fork over 40K for a Honda roadster.

The Concept R is going to be kinda pricey with the options its supposed to sport. Perhaps a little too pricey to have a VW badge on the front. VW seems to be moving away from its roots in its quest to enter the luxury car market.

Thats just my 2 cents though. I still think its a hot car.

With a mid engine... I'd think they would put 4 motion in it or make it rear wheel.

Geez, this thing has been talked about forever ... I can't imagine how successful it could have been if VW had released this in the late 1990s, when the SLK and Boxster were still hot sellers.

But if the Saturn Skye / Pontiac Solstice do come out as I've heard they will, VW just might massacre those sales with the Concept R :)

Newest Vortex article (http://www.vwvortex.com/artman/publish/volkswagen_news/article_1154.shtml) , with some surprising details ... going to be a soft-top (boo) but cheaper I suppose. Aiming for Miata pricing ... that's unbelievable. Literally. My guess is around $30,000 so it undercuts BMWs and the SLK, but more than the Miata and former MR2 spyder obviously.

Lets hope it does better than the Phaeton ;)

I'd like to see some updated photos though, as I can't imagine it looking anything like the 2-year-old concept, since VW's styling has changed so dramatically now.

2500lb is pretty tubby for a soft-top roadster.

not really.
Doesn't look to bad, but I dont' think
it'll sell because it's a vw. Do you think
they're going to come out with motercycles next?

Considering the first VW prototype by Porsche was built by Zundapp in 1932, why not?

Honda, Suzuki, BMW make them ... but that's a completely different market, not even worthy of discussion here.

But the badge-image thing definately could be an unfair barrier to any company, let alone VW ... I do wonder if that's why the Phaeton hasn't been a smash success, especially as all I've heard about it is that it is an amazing automobile.

People bashed Porsche for the Cayenne, Ford for the GT, who knows how many other companies for venturing into a product range not traditionally associated with them .. but that's just not logical; the only proper judge of anything should be the finished product itself, not the percieved circumstances/history surrounding it.

I mean, that's like me saying that Honda shouldn't build that new behemouth Chevy Avalanche-knockoff truck, because it would go against their honorable history of making small, reliable, fuel-efficient, utilitarian automobiles
