Do you use a Mac or PC?

I use a PC, but prefer OS X Macs

I've got both. They both have advantages. The PC's advantages are dictated more by the software developed for them than anything else. I prefer the Mac though (10.3).

It is close so far...I should have asked which do you prefer....

I've been having really bad luck with PCs lately...too many popups and viruses no matter how many blockers I install. My sister has that little white Mac laptop (don't know model) and has no problems with it whatsoever...Mac's looking more promissing everyday

She has an iBook. I used to work IT at my university, everyday atleast 10-20 PCs came in needing cleaning from popups and all that crap. In my 8 months working there, not one mac came in while I was working.
Check out the new iMac, it is amazing.

Still rockin my beater Dell laptop, used a Mac only once or twice but was impressed with the OS on them ... since I don't use my computer for much besides word processing, music and mostly Internet, I'll definately consider a Mac once my ghettotop finally fries out .. hopefully not for another 2 years or so, though.

bofum - no button for bofum
used mac's in my graphic design classes back at state, but when i had to work on my projects at home all i had was a pc cuz it was cheaper to build. the only problem i ran into is changing the file extensions when i was going back a forth between the two. but, i have to say, mac's are good graphically and good for design and also have clean a UI (user interface) but pc's are more fun to play with, mod and play games on. oh and i can't get over the fact that the mac mouse has only one button.
15" Powerbook....love it!!!
If you think Panther (OS X) is cool wait for Tiger...it will be even better!!!

I'm actually still running Jaguar. I dont see the need to upgrade to Panther with Tiger coming out supposedly in the next quarter or so.

I agree that Apple needs to accept the fact that more than one mouse button isn't confusing. It's more efficient and convenient and Apple should start shipping multi-button mice with their pooters. You know, pretty much any other company's mouse will work too. My mouse on my Mac has 5 buttons.
Most major software is available for Macs and most hardware will work on a Mac. The only reasons I can think of to not buy one are: 1. Strapped for cash (lots of inexpensive Celeron or older Pentium machines available) 2.You want a computer primarily for gaming. 3. Your work, school, etc requires you to have a Windows PC (there is a particular program that you need to run that is not available on Macs). 4. VAG-COM (#1 comes in handy if you do own a Mac)

5. You don't want to support vendor lock-in.
6. You don't think Mac hardware lives up to Mac software.
7. You don't want to pay the "pretty case premium".
8. You like to have a machine that is upgradeable in the future.
9. You find the Apple community zealots annoying .
10. You don't want to encourage the Reality Distortion Field.

I was refering to legitimate reasons though :)
Out of yours I might add #9 to my list
5. Should BMW let Hyundai build cars around their engines? Yeah its a stretch.
6. You can't deny the power of the G5 :p
7. Some would argue that its not just the pretty case you're paying the premium for. Look to numbers 5 and 6
8. Last time I checked the G5's were upgradable but yeah the iMacs could use some upgradability. I think the market that would buy an iMac would tend to be the ones not looking to upgrade in the future though.
9. Yeah we can be at times. But the same could be said of the Windows zealots.

For those of you who "think" macs are always more expensive and that you are paying just for the beautiful/clean looks.
http://www.linuxinsider.com/story/36120.html
In addition, how many people here buy a car and upgrade the engine in 4 - 5 years, as opposed to buying a new one?
Apple would have to use jumbo jet fans in all of their cases like the PCs to allow for ugrading processors. The beauty of the mac is, they design each computer to work perfectly with its components. It is not upgradable because it was built for what it has.

5. Perhaps not, but they ought to let you put in an aftermarket radio.
6. No, but that's an IBM product, not an Apple product. =)
7. Yeah, but Jobs isn't around here...
8. But with fewer choices and more money.
9. Windows zealots are just confused.

5. Apple will let you put in "aftermarket" harddrives, video cards, RAM, etc
6. The G5 is an IBM product but it also a PowerPC which is a product of AIM(Apple, IBM, Motorola) So it got it's roots from a joint effort(mostly IBM and Moto) Also, it doesnt take away from the fact that the G5 is available in Apple desktops which is part of Apple hardware. Or was your original point not based on perfromance?
7. Jobs isn't the only one that would say it.
8. Your original point was upgradability though and the G5's are upgradable.
9. I can see :D

I have been considering replacing my Sony Vaio notebook with ibook recently. You can't find a PC Sub notebook for 1k. But Mac has one and it's has all the connectivities I want.

1. Who cares?
People like Allizard, Troikie, and Ted E that might be considering switching(either way) and might want to know of any advantages or disadvantages of doing so? We're just having a fun little debate. I think we both like playing the Devil's advocate. ;)

I'm pretty clueless when it comes to mac. Spend way too many years on PC. Anyway, what program do you use on Mac to see NTFS. I would like to transfer pictures / videos between these 2 OS. Also, can a mac view DivX xDiv formats?

You can view most Divx files but I've run across some that don't cooperate. I'm not sure about NTFS, I think OSX can read only.

Quit being a trouble maker.
It didn't start decaying into "Battle Posts" untill you started with your list.
Macs aren't as closed to the upgrade/third party world as they used to be. And you can thank Apple for lots of the communication standards and ports we all enjoy (mac or PC). Their new OS is Unix based so you can install and run unix applications. You can even boot up a mac w/ linux if you really want to. There are even drivers being written for some PC PCI cards that allow them to run on macs. Their limited open source movement has allowed some cool things to happen (but they're still very ownerous of their core code)
Tony; I've got my Jag upgrade around here. You should try it out. It's a lot more stable and the airport sw works better.
Computers are tools. So some of us use craftsman and some use snap-on. BFD.
As for processor upgradability, Daughtercards have let you upgrade processors on macs for more than 7 years but just like a pc, upgrading the processor doesn't guarantee that your motherboard will be adequate.

When you transfer files through network, it doesnt use NTFS to communicate. It will remove the NTFS securities and then send the file ... so NTFS has nothign to do with the actual transfer, just if you have proper permissions to look at the file

Yeah, I thought he might have been thinking of sharing an external harddrive though. I *think* NTFS would come into play then.

I've always used PC but learned the inside and out of macs when I was doing tech work for a high school. Mac's are bada$$ in terms of how easy they are to use and yes no viruses... but nowadays some of the software I need to run only comes in PC and I dont want to run VirtualPC.

If you can't see the humor, you've either need to:
1) Upgrade your sarcasm detector
or
2) Quit reading political threads
because you are taking it far too seriously.
For the record, I'm a Debian zealot, so I think Tiger..Lion..kittycat, whatever and Winders both suck.

I don't know about OSX specifically, but I know if you mount NTFS with *BSD(what OSX is based on), it simply ignores NTFS security.
