And then there are days when I really hate my car.

Its driving all funky again like I'm towing a trailer behind me but this time the brakes are not hot sooo...

I pulled out the trust Vag-Com and took a look at my engine load at idle and it bounces between roughly 18% and 24% (with the a/c off). That coupled with the fact that my a/c makes a horrible rattling when I turn it on leads me to believe the clutch on the thing is toast.

I don't really use the a/c which is probably why I'm having this problem but the woman loves it so I need to fix it. The way I see it, I have two options and both kinda suck.

Option 1: Replace the clutch

This may or may not fix the problem and I hear the clutches are a bit of a pain to get apart on a bench and I would be doing mine on the car to keep from opening the a/c lines.

Option 2: Replace the whole compressor

I can probably replace the compressor myself without much fuss but I have to vacuum out the lines first. Then I will need to vac the thing down again to get the moisture out and refill the thing. I'm not sure if those cans they sell are enough to fill the whole system.

Anyone been down this path before or should I go with

Option 3: Take it to the dealer

It will be a cold day in hell when I sell that car.

That would be like admitting defeat :p

Doesn't it always seem like you have that car in pieces in one way or another? If you've got the dough, let the stealership deal with it. Then when it's not fixed you can pin it on them.LOL.

DIY... Tom and I did the SVXs A/C after the tranny swap. It was pretty straight forward, after we expelled R12 into the air.

I was trying not to take a shotgun to the ozone layer :p

R12 molecules are heavier than air, and would stay at the ground level. The newer R134a doesn't deplete ozone, but is lighter, and can cause more environmental damage being a greenhouse gas and all.

Take it to a shop to evacuate the system, then DIY. Go hydrocarbon on the refrigerant if you want the system to work less and cause less harm in the long run.

-- Kane ... not to mention prolly cheaper too, what with Dupont ****ing us now. Again.

Awesome info... Thanks.

I'm going to call the dealer tomorrow and see what they charge just because it may be better to let them hassle with it right now.
