Its ok if it does it on occasion... my buddies GLI 1.8t sometimes "pops" or backfires, but I think its just his side exit exhaust. A lot of loud backfiring means that your running rich. Correct me if im wrong anyone...

When you say release the throttle, are you releasing from WOT? Excess fuel suddenly cut off from air by releasing a throttle from WOT can cause back-fire. If it's making this noise consistently and you're not even gunning the engine, then your cat may no longer be working (it burns excess fuel) or your MAF sensor is malfunctioning. Or you have a leak.

Useless fact of the day: though we all call it back-fire, the correct term is after-fire. The term back-fire is actually what we call pinging or engine knock.

Backfiring means it's firing through the intake. The above is correct it should be termed After Fire.

Backfiring is caused by wrong ignition or cam timing. After firing is due to excess fuel in the exhaust system which can also be due to timing issues.

My VR6 has a side exit exhaust as well, and when it is cold in the morning it rumbles and spits, as the ECU has pulled timing (cold start program) As soon as its warm, no issue.

Now sometimes when its warm, and I just ran at WOT, and then let off the gas, it will do what I call a Burble, from extra fuel coming out for the split second after the throttle plate is shut. It in no means after fires, but kinda just lights the fumes in the exhaust.

It's hard to explain in words. If the car is making loud after fire, get your timing checked. Something is off.

no it happends when its cold, not loud ones tho, once it warms up, its normal.
and thanx for the correction, after-fire!
it gives mild/ modderate pops when iam cruising and i just let the gas peddle go.

then a backfire is when my intake popped on mk2 when i was punching that doo doo out of the lil bastard.lol. that was loud!

once again, thanx everyone for ur response and knowledge.

but i have 3 inch piping all the way, not cat, only high flow resonator and muffler. (if that info was needed to mention)
i do have vr6 MAF housing tho and an abd manifold.

Mine gurgles if I was anywhere above a subjective 75% open throttle. Sometimes there's after fire if I got all the way to WOT.

From what you are describing, everything's fine. Maybe the throttle body might need to be adjusted but no biggy.

Mine pops a lot after I let go of the gas, especially when the car is going down a hill engine breaking or I'm at a high rpm. I've got an Ansa on my Jetta and I've also read that it's normal, at least with my exhaust.

cool, just wondering. but when i punch it all the way, its a smooth roar, and u can hear the turbo screaming....gotta love it.
although i wished that when i had my vr6 24v, that i would installed a exhaust system. that would have been sweet!
