Well, I don't, but the car I want to buy DOES.

Its an '83 rabbit with a 2.0 ABA from a '96 Jetta I believe.

I know that a mk3 tranny will bolt onto the motor, however, i'm not sure if the tranny will bolt onto the car.

any help would be greatly appreciated!

I'll post the follow up question now, just in case

"Does anyone have one they want to sell?"

thanks in advace!

It wont. You need an 020 tranny.

should I have any preference as to the particular "code"? Wheres my best bet to find one asap and in awesome condition? SGR?

Hmm, awsome condition? Well I have a just built 4K tranny with an 0.85 5th gear with a quaife for $2500.

But you want cheap I bet. So your best bet is go to Ecology and buy one from any A1 chassis car. (remove it yourself.) The best codes are 4K, 2H, 9A, as close ratios and then there are FF, FN, EN codes that are wide ratios.

A list of transmission codes and gear ratios here (http://www.scirocco.org/gears/). Good to bookmark at least...

Oh yeah, and there wont be any problems fitting the A2 transmission to the 96 engine, correctomundo?

Except 90% of all A2 020's wont fit an A1 car. (the rear trans mount studs are either not there or in the wrong location. Confirm those are in place and you can use it.

so it looks like the easiest thing to do would be to get ahold of an A1 then...

4k with a tall 5th FTW!! I had one in my MK2 GTI, I could make it from Long Beach to Escondido on and 1/8 of a tank.

SGR has a 1984 Rabbit "7A" transmission for $150, which sounds like deal to me...

anyone have any gripes with the 7A? Weak Links?

Its a wide ratio trans. Should be fine. Great fuel economy.

Thanks for all the help you guys, I'm really interested in buying a certain mk1 rabbit, but can't get it checked out by a mechanic since its got tranny issues. Hopefully I'll be able to get the owner to purchase this replacement, have it installed, get it to the shop, have it checked out, and buy the sucker!

Actually, some MKIIIs come with 020s. In fact I have an 020 from a 98 in my 86 GTI, and I sold my old tranny to some guy with an 83 GTI. ( I assume you are interested in buying Antrim's GTI?)
Just his luck, it starting going out 6 months after I sold it to him and right after he listed it for sale:(

yep, whats the deal with these transmissions anyways? I'm gonna buy a 7A from SGR and have it shipped to antrim within the week. SGR gives a 6month warranty...lets cross our fingers...

its from an 84 rabbit, Antrims is an 83, I don't suspect that VW would have made any drastic changes in less than a years time. I'm not a gambler though, so I'm gonna ask around before i purchase

Im fairly familiar with all early 020 trans codes but the 7A is something im not sure where it origionally came from. if it fits 909dub's 86 GTI then it likely wont fit an A1 car. But like I said, just verify with the seller.
