I will probably be grabbing either one of these before going back to Finland. I've been reading a lot of reviews of these (e.g. www.dpreview.com) and people seem to be pretty happy with these (considering they cost like 1/3 of Canon lens price).

The new version of Sigma 18-50mm F2.8 was just announced like a week ago so I haven't seen any in stores yet.

What do you guys think?

I currently have the kit lens Canon 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 and Canon 50mm F1.8.

I'm leaning towards the 17-70mm at the moment because of it's extra reach and little bit wider start.

I'd go with the 17-70, I have the 24-70 2.8 and sometimes wish I had gotten the 17-70. I've never really heard any complaints about that lens, while the 18-50 has its quirks like CA, but supposedly the new 18-50 2.8 Macro that Sigma just announced is supposed to solve all that and have much better IQ.
