Just the motor? Are you talking about a s52 motor from an M3? They usually sell for thousands, depending on what else comes with it (accessories, ecu, etc.).

BMW spindle flying through space and time...blue and white crawling through my head...3.2l...hmmm...??? I see dead cars with good engines laying in the form of a grave called junkyards...hahaha... Seriously though, 3.2 liter from which car...just the engine or the car too...I know I sometimes get'em confused too. Mann, I really love the Mclaren F1.
I know of a brand new 3.2 crank thats sittin

That motor is called the S54 and I have no idea how much they would cost. GL in finding one. Have you seen this?

I would contact MITE46 and ask him for advice.
And NO, the tranny is not compatible.

also, you might have some issues being that your motor is a derivitave of the m52; more comonly an e36 motor.
the e46 323 and 328 are both based off the m52; while the e46 325 and 330 recieved different engines.

The M3 is a totally different car than the 323i... you are better off selling your 323i (privately, you'll get more out of it, or as trade-in to the 'stealer') and getting the car that you really want... which is the all-mighty ///M3. It's not just the engine that is different my friend. BMW's are designed and engineered to individual specs. Each car is a different beast in itself. The 323i has a suspension set-up and tranny to match that of the power output of the engine in which it was designed for. If you do an engine swap with the ///M3 you'll find yourself swapping not only the engine but the wiring harness, the entire suspension set-up/plus brakes, and the transmission (the entire drivetrain). There is a lot that goes into an engine swap, and by the time your done and finished with your neat little project, you will have spent more money than if you had just went out and bought a brand new 2007 M3. BMW e46 M3's have come down in price by a lot, and when ever the new V-8 M3 hit's the states the price of an e46 will drastically fall. I am sure you can find a 2002 e46 M3 in good shape for around $30,000. You just have to look. I'd hate to see all your hard earned money from an Iraq deployment (we all know it isn't much, either) get wasted on an engine swap you'll most likely not have the funds to finish... when you could have just out-right bought the car that you wanted in the first place. there is no power, like that of the ///M.
-p.s.
if you really want a neat little project, swap an e46 M3 engine onto an e36 M3 chasis... add Active Autowerkes Supercharger... and presto!!! 500bhp!!! and lot less weight than the e46. that would be truley sic. ;)
*note: if your just looking for some power gains, look no further than Active Autowerkes http://activeautowerke.com/supercharger/e46325/main.php , try some forced induction as an alternative to an expensive engine swap.
I am sure Troy from Group 5 Motorsports can hook you up with the install too. They have a well trained staff and can answer most of your questions. http://www.group5motorsport.com/main.pl

the e36 isn't really THAT much lighter than the e46.
you could do more, and cheaper by sticking with the s52 and just tuning the piss out of it. the s54 is so high strung as it is, whereas the s52 seems to have a lot more room to mod, without blowing anything up.
there's some e36 m3's on bimmerforums pumping out rediculous numbers near 500hp and shit.
