What do you guys think about me removing my power steering unit from my 04 GLI for some more power?

You'll never find the correct belt size or be able to wrap it correctly. All MKIV's have power steering. There is no correct way to remove it.
You would be better off removing the A/C unit, by converting to a non A/C Euro setup, but that's going to be expensive. Plus the only cars that didn't have the A/C option were the 1.4L models in Germany. I don't know if the parts are interchangable.

Seriously if you are looking make more power there a lot of other things I would do before going after the power steering pump or AC for that matter.

Yeah pulleys will get you the same gain if not more. Removing the power steering will result in all kinds of premature suspension and bushing failures in the front end unless you convert EVERYTHING over... in the end, its not worth the effort and money

You'd have a helluva time trying to re wrap the belt. All MKIV chassis cars have power steering.
I don't think there is such a thing as a manual rack and pinion for a MKIV. unless you go with a custom setup.
As for removing the A/C, its less involved but expensive to do correctly (OEM Non A/C parts) I can get them from Germany, but there is really no point.

Agreed.
You save some weight and some power but not enough to justify the trouble.
I should add that I was looking down the A/C removal path for a long time. I'm still kinda but not really considering it. My car may never see the street again after 2007 and I know there is a german model TT without A/C from the factory that I can get parts from.
the A/C causes minimum drag when the clutch is disengaged, as far as the P/S, come on, thats a which hunt if you think you are gonna get more power from that, I mean you will, but not enough to make it worth while. I would guess maybe 1-2 at the motor, tops, the reason race cars are stripped, is weight, which is a whole different ball park

Exactly. And if you wanna save even more weight than that, relocate the battery. Removing the power steering and A/C is towards the end of a long list of power to weight improvements.

cool thanx for your input people.
I never knew that it was such a very difficult and expensive mod.
