how hard would it be to install a set of lowering springs? what tools would i need? im going to order a set of intrax springs in a week or two. would i have to take the stereo system out my truck to install the rears?

sorry, i have no idea what you would need for a 5 series. but if it ends up you need to take it to a shop and you dont have a shop you go to regularly, creative autoworks will do a superb job for a decent price.

The E39 is the hugest pain in the ass. Nowhere near as easy as an E30 or E36.

The fronts are easy and can be done within two hours. The rears are the big pain in the arse. The entire rear seats and rear deck need to come out of the inside in order to get to the upper strut mounting bolts. Then you need to remove the black fender lining from both rear wheel wells to give you enough clearance to remove the strut housings. And then all the rear bushings are tightened while the car is at actual ride height, this means when you unbolt the rear shock the swingarm swings UP instead of falling down with gravity like you would expect. So you either need good balance and stand on a breaker bar while you try to shimmy the strut housing out, or you get a buddy to hold it down while you do you work. Once you get it out the rest is straightforward.

When I did it on a 528 it took me 2 hours for the front and 8 hours for the rear (my indy shop charges 5 hours of labor for the rear). I had typical hand tools, air tools, and a spring compressor. I vowed never to be working on the rear suspension of an E39 after that.

My E39 touring has air springs in the rear which means getting it lowered just requires taking it to a shop to have it programmed.

Good luck.

P.S. I would save up and get appropriate shocks too and do the install at the same time. You'd be pissed if you did all that work to install springs only to have to redo it 6 months later to replace those OEM shocks.

+1. They did mine, those guys are pretty professional. Too bad they didn't have that software update or I'd get that from them too.

I've helped with an E39 Spring install before........very time consuming indeed. Take it to a shop for sure.
