Here's something new my Jetta just started blessing me with. On cold starts, the car will idle for about 30 seconds, and then the oil temp light beeps and blinks for about another minute, and then goes off. WTF? It's never done this before, and now it's done it a few times in the last week. Any suggestions? Maybe just a bad sensor?
Are you using a factory filter? Some aftermarket filters can bleed the oil back into the pan overnight and it takes the motor a few seconds to build up oil pressure.

It's definitely not factory. I get that shit done at Valvoline. Should do it myself, but don't have the means. However, I rarely use a factory oil filter, and I've never had this problem in 92,000 miles.

Order OEM filters from www.parts4vws.com
Aftermarket filters don't usually incorporate a check valve and tend to be weaker in construction. Before I knew better, one of my Mk2s had a Fram filter burst...
hmmmmm.........................
usually the light will blink once or twice then go right out, and it comes on after 30 seconds and stays on for a minute, the pressure sensor may be defective, its cheap and easy to change. The light doesn't flicker when the engine is warm at idle?

Is there enough oil in the car?

The light flickers for a minute or so right after a cold start. Once it warms up a little, it turns off, and I won't see it again.
Is there enough oil in the car?
Yes.

is it the red coolant temp you are talking about?

Maybe??? There's only six different lights in the cluster, one is for oil level, and the other i thought was oil temp. Oh shit...if I'm wrong this is going to be funny. I can't find a pic right now, but I believe it's right below the oil level light. It looks like a flag pole and yes, it's red.

No such thing as an Oil temp light on the MK4. I think the flag pole you are referring to is the coolant light. In the morning when it is cold your collant reservoir might run low but when it warms up it overflows back into it and the light goes off. I had the same problem but add a little coolant and you are golden.
