Throwing this out to the Volvo crowd (Doug) to see if anyone on here has much knowledge of or has used the NIRA Engine management system before? IT looks interesting and has porting for MAP, IONIZation metering and lots of other stuff.

Its a Swedish company that currently does not have a US distributor side yet but one of the girls on a SAAB board just brought one back from Sweden to setup in her 9000Aero.
We will see how easy the tuning is for it.

I have had exposure to it. One of my good buddies over there works for Atech in sweden and really recommends it.
To me, the downfalls are:
1. No US support
2. Price (its EXPENSIVE and dealer price gets you a whopping 75 dollars off)
I worked at becoming the US dealer for a while but when they told me my price it became almost impossible for me to justify selling it and putting my time into learning it when you could buy something from haltech, 034, civinco (which I sell), Megasquirt, PLX, AEM ect ect for the same or less and have way way way more support.
The guys overseas really recommend it though. Its supposed to be pretty awesome.
I am trying to get something going with Wolf I do have a contact there now just haven't really pursued it at all.

You have brough up the same concerns I thought of with support and the fact that the software is still written in swedish!!!!

lol oh ya theres that too.
Basically NIRA dealers make their money from tuning which is fine but iirc its about an 1800 dollar system at cost. Not to many people willing to shell out that kind of cash.
034 efi is the way to go!

Not familiar with that one.... On the saab's you want to go with a system that still allows for ion sensing so you can maintain knock control and keep the precious pistons from melting.
I know of 1 person in the states that just picked up a NIRA and I am waiting to see how she does getting it tuned before I make up my mind. I would like to pick up an older (94-99) SAAB 900 and put in a Haltech or Megasquirt system to see how much power you can pull out of it that way but that will be long down the road.. I am on project cutoff right now.

if you tune it right knock sensor integration isn't that important.
Very few standalones use knock sensors.

Well when I am off project restriction I will have to decide my next project between a Volvo or SAAB and go from there on a standalone.

yep... I dont know man. I frankly hate standalones. I've done alot of standalone, piggyback and chip tuning and they each have their benifits and drawbacks.
I wouldn't use EMS on something unless it was:
1. not originally a FI car
2. Fitment reasons (going to COP or something)
3. Pre OBDI and extremely modified.
I just hate giving up the reliability of the factory EMS.
