Gtech meters are real. They aren't entirely accurate but they are pretty good estimates.

Their main feature is their use of accelerometers. If you know with some accuracy how much your car weighs and this thing measures with pretty high accuracy what kind of acceleration you get when you mash the gas, then it can calculate how much force and how much power the car is making to accelerate like that. I think their algorithms even try to account for things like wheel slip through digital signal processing and some math.

The new ones keep adding more and more features on top of that core functionality.

If you know someone with a Vag-Com. The new software can do roughly the same thing through the instrument module. Its not at good as the Gtech but its free if you have a vag-com.

I've got the latest VAG software w/ those features. Error correction is +- 0.6sec...definetely not perfect but it's something.

I used to have one, and it wasn't even the new ss model, and mine was within about +-.15 seconds at the track on the 1/4 mile. Not too shabby really.

The real gain of it is even if it isn't completely accurate to a dyno, when you mod your car you can get the differences from your last run you did. Just keep in mind, you need a level survace to do it. They are really nice though.

Mine reads +0.3 second and +3mph, compared to the official timing lights at a 1/4 mile track.
