Got off work early last Friday so I called up Janelle and went to hang out with her a bit and took some pics. They turned out pretty good considering it was kinda rainy and clowdy. :)

A couple of tips that will help you in general with these types of shoots...

first of all, it looks like you took these around 1pm or so. The shadows aren't looking good, except in the shot where she's in the shade of the building. Try bumping up the power of your flash, or using a reflector, or both, to help kill the 5 o'clock shadow.

Also, most shots like this look best when the focus is on her, not the background. The building and the fountain in the first 2 shots make them more 'tourist-y' than glamour. Tighter crops, shallow DOF, focus on her.

Don't take the shot from below the model. Having a model look down is less-than-flattering. When i'm shooting, I specifically will ask for the model to tilt her chin up.

Finally, on your poses, be concious of the shoulders. If her shoulders are square to the camera, it makes her look 'wide'. If they're perpendicular to the camera, it makes her look too skinny. There is a very awkward balance in between which will be much more flattering to her. If you get a chance, flip through some 'senior portrait' albums, and you'll see what I mean. You may even consider buying a '101 poses for portrait photography' book or something along those lines, to give the girl an idea of how to stand. Even have her bring some of her favorite girly magazines, and imitate the poses in those photos. You'll start to see the difference when you look for it.

You're really developing fast as a photographer! Keep working on it, and you'll be getting some solid paying jobs in no time.

Yeah I read his tips...very good advice indeed. Though this shoot with Janelle was pretty much just for the fun of it and to hang out a bit, I usually take his input during my other shoots.
