Shot at night, three flashes, shadows bumped slightly (from five to nine), and unsharpen mask. Look ma, no cropping!

I like it, I think I would have liked it even better with more light behind your car.
Here goes your disclaimer:
Not trying to be an asshole, I'm just pointing out something that you might consider next time :)

Thats a pretty cool pic even though I feel bad for you seeing your engine out.
I think the picture might have been better without the a/c line.

More light behind the car? As in highlighting the outline of the car? Maybe if I shot it during the day, but I only have three flashes...would probably need at least three more to do that properly.
Yeah, the AC line isn't/wasn't ideal. I didn't prep the car at all for this. The block was already sitting there (complete with hole in it!), the head was about two feet to the left, and I moved some jack stands out of the shot. I didn't want to search that AC hardline all the way back to pull it out just for a photo. It looks phallic and bums me out, hah!
The car is on it's way...I probably work on it a couple times a week. The head is at the shop right now, need to do a fifth gear swap on this tranny, got a clutch on order, and I'm hoping to have it back together next week. I actually do need some help, though, Steve. Do you have a portable welder that you could bring over? My new block is cracked on one of the engine mount holes and I need take it somewhere if I can't something towards me. Also want to get the internal flapper on my turbo welded up.

The light behind the car would make the hood drop a little shadow upon you and would laso brighten up the floor. Using flash to fill in the subject (you) would then make the car situation more dramatic. Anyways, like I said. I don't dislike the photo, I think it's cool and delivers the message well. The lighting suggestion was just to accentuate. :)

Not sure I fully understand. A flash behind the hood wouldn't cast a shadow; it would create a backlit situation with the hood being more defined. The fill flashes on me were bounced off the walls, with that said, one could have been mildly angled downward a bit more to bring out he engine block and ground more, but I wasn't conscious of it shooting at the time and I think the mid tones on my jeans and shoes are perfectly exposed anyway. There could have been a flash inside of the cab to continue the ray-of-light/mystique feel from underneath the car, but I'm out of flashes. I generally shoot action photos, so needing more than three flashes is rare...doesn't mean I don't want them; I just haven't added them to my setup.
Don't be so modest about criticizing stuff...this ain't a giant circle jerk.

mmmmmmmmm, circle jerking lol
Loving the shot bro! And as for a welder...I have a stick welder you can use, you will need some sticks for it though. Good luck on the ride.

I wasn't talking about flash behind the car, I was talking just light in general. By casting a shadow, I mean making the engine bay look darker than the rest. Then the fill flash for the subject.

I think you should crop out the broom on the left.

I guess I disagree a bit. The detail in the mess of wiring and background make it look all that much more of a daunting situation to me. To each their own, of course.

That's it, we're fighting!
