k so on my way home last nite from SD (or was it not?) with justin [jwill] on the really long stretches of open road i did a *spirited drive* with some slammed civic hatch that didnt have turbo, cuz i swear i didnt hear a bov lol. anyways we were rollin from 3rd gear. i was around 3-4k rpms when we went at it. and he stuck with me all teh way to around 5k rpms then once i shifted into 4th his car EXPLODED past me! like OMGHI2UVTECHISGAY! hahah we went at it 3times and the same exact thing happend we locked up around 3rd gear dead even then he just blows by me instantly b4 having to shift. i know he didnt shift till after he was ahead of me cuz 1)his car made that "hickup" bounce when he shfited and 2)listing to his loud ass exhaust. it was crazy cuz his motor sounded pretty beefy or at least sounded better than normal honda civics. anyways the moral of the story is i seen someones SN on here that had 'vtech, all the lag and none of the boost' so it just reminded me of it, and how i rememberd taht vtech doesnt kick in till high rpms anyways...so yea.

vtec = variable timing electronic lift control. Basically the car has different cam lobes. One is for low rpm, the second is for higher rpm and it allows the computer to change the timing to get the most out of that little engine.

k just wiki'd it....thats acctually pretty cool. so taht dude musta had a semi built b16 to my stockish vr6. thats why he kept up with me throu the same gear and then instaly blew by without shifting...see and i alawys thot b16's sucked without turbo

Pretty much every car has it now (Though Honda's guy did invent it or something along those lines). Honda doesn't have anything else good to offer, so they advertise it as a marketing gimic.

VTEC and turbo are actually not a very good combination. Many do it successfully, but it is not very reliable. It is easier to put a turbo on a non-vtec honda. I used to drive an Integra and was looking into building it. I quickly realized that N/A was the way to go.

I had to know. Honda was the first to use a set of different cam lobes one for low rpm and one for high rpm, but damn Fiat in the 60's.
"Fiat was the first auto manufacturer to patent a functional variable valve timing system which included variable lift. Developed by Giovanni Torazza in the late 1960s, the system used hydraulic pressure to vary the fulcrum of the cam followers (US Patent 3,641,988). The hydraulic pressure changed according to engine speed and intake pressure. The typical opening variation was 37%."
