Gallardo to get Superleggera treatment?

The latest member of the Lamborghini bullring will be unveiled to the world next month at the Geneva Motor Show. Although there is nothing official coming from the Raging Bull other than it will have a world reveal at the show, word on the street is that it will be a lightweight version of the Gallardo called the "Superleggera" - an Italian term that from the 30s meaning "super light" that refers to tube-frame construction.

Clearly a response to Ferrari's F430 Challenge Stradale, the Gallardo Superleggera - or whatever they'll call it - will shed some 220 pounds through the use of carbon fiber body panels and spartan interior reminiscent of the Porsche 911 GT2, according to the speculation. The weight savings, combined with the 10 or so extra horses reportedly being squeezed out of the V-10 engine, should allow the Gallardo Supperleggera to drop a couple of tenths off of the base Gallardo's 0-60 time. Expect handling to improve as well through suspension upgrades.

Stay tuned to MotorTrend.com for more on this Lamborghini and all the rest of the Geneva show unveilings during the show press days, March 6-7.

The weight loss will be more apparent on the track, not the drag strip.
