View Full Version : Gas mileage effected, K&N? Rims?

Ok, I ws doing some searching on the 'Tex and didn't find much for what I am looking for. I just recently got some mileage numbers from the wife, and if they are correct then my Getta is only getting 18.5mpg. When I got the car it was averaging 27-28mpg.

In Sept I checked the mileage after the 19s where put on it, and it showed closer to 24mpg.

I got the big 80k service done (at 80k mi) and just got my 85k service (oil change). When I got the oil change I put in a K&N drop in. Now I am calculating that I am only getting 18-19mpg.

So, I am going to wait till the next fill up and see what kind of mileage I am getting but, with a completly stock engine, with exception now only to the K&N, I don't think 19mpg is signs of a healthy engine.

Ideas? Help?

bad MAF sensor possibly?

Yeah definitely not right. I would also guess a bad maf or some type of sensor going bad.

How much does the MAF run, and even better... Think that would be something my warranty covers? I'll have to check that out.

That's worse than my fullsize Bronco rolling 33 inch tires. Something is way off, could it be the math?

Update: Thinking it could have been the math. I just filled back up after 150mi at 6.048gal. Came out to about 24mpg. Hoping that is correct. Gonna check the mileage after this weekend since the wife should be burning up a full tank.

Either bad math, bad MAF, and I'd also suspect coolant temp sensor if you dont have a green top

You know what? The wife said the coolant temp sensor light came on the other morning. Right when she started the car. She said she turned it off and just started the car and it didn't come back on since... hmm... how would that affect mileage though?

my MAF went bad and it took me forever to figure out what was wrong because the symptoms weren't very persistent... but yeah i was getting like 19mpg the whole time so i'd check that out.. i got one from performance-cafe.com but they have the vr6 one and say you just have to switch out the sensors :liar: DON'T BUY THIS ONE.. just spend the extra cash and get one from parts4euros or something

OK, been checking the gas mileage at the pump for the last two fill-ups. Looks to be getting about 25-26mpg. That is much more what it should be. Thanks for the input, and I will be keeping an eye on the MAF and Temp sensor.

There is no temp sensor light. That is a low coolant light that probably came on. The temp is on the dash and doesn't have a light. Check and make sure your coolant isn't low because in the morning when it is cold the coolant contracts and will trip the sensor but when it warms up you will have coolant in the reservoir.

what are the VR drivers getting typically as far as gas mileage?

Yes, well I checked it in the manual, just using bad nomenclature. Good point. I think that is it. The level was good at night, after the car had been sitting for a few hours.

Well in my mixed commute or about half freeway and half road which entails a lot of stop and go I get about 19mpg. Straight freeway I can average around 24.5 mpg.
