My coilpack wires are cracking and my car uses the same ignition wiring harness as a Mk4 GTI.
There is already a TSB with the procedure floating around out there but if there is interest on here I might pull out the camera while I do mine. If no one on here is looking at doing this repair, I'm just going to leave well enough alone and let people go off the TSB.

No... I'm talking about actually changing the wiring harness going to the packs.
There is a 40 dollar replacement harness with beefed up wires and a 50 dollar heat shield you can get to protect it.

I've done it, but I've seen it needed enough I think a write up would be good for this. Let people know its really not that bad

Oh ok then go for it. I love reading all type of technical write ups. Maybe Scott can help you with it :ha:

I hear the wires get hot and cause shorts and engine misfires and what not. I think I would spend the extra money when I have to replace min as well and get that TT225 heatshield.

IS that $40 harness oem or something? I would think the 225 might have bigger wires?

The harness was ~$40 and is OEM for an AWP engine (not 225)
The heatshield was ~$50 and is OEM for one or both of the 225 engine codes.
As for wire size between a 225 and 180...
They are not different and they wouldn't need to be. The new harness is a bit beefier than the original harness on the car because of the issues people were having.
The only significant differences between the 180 and 225 are:
turbo (k03s vs k04)
SMIC (1 vs 2)
rods (cast vs forged)
oil squirters (225 has them)
after-run coolant pump (225 has one)
exhaust (225 is bigger overall)
transmission (5sp vs 6sp)
All the other differences are mainly due to different routing because of a different intake and exhaust tract.
The 225, because it was a factory tuned 1.8T got a few little extras like heat shields and rubber boots on some of the electrical connectors that other models didn't get. A bunch of those little pieces can be used on any 1.8T.

good to know. Basically I wish the GTI had the 225 components. I have seen yours at the meet. If I remember correctly, the 180hp has single exhaust?

Yup... I have a 180.
The single exhast is usually a dead giveaway that its a 180. On a FWD its a pain in the ass to do a dual exhaust. The 180 Quattro guys have an easier time of it but they have to buy a new rear valence so they usually stick with a single tip.
