hey guys,

I have DSL and I have been having trouble with my internet connection when I'm playing online games (ex: Gunbound). Often times it seems like my computer will break connection with the server. When I just browse the internet or chatting online/webcam, I do not notice any disconnections, but only in games.

I was just wondering if there's any way to solve this problem? is there any programs that I can use to fix this problem? Will an Internet connection optimizer work?

Thanks in advance!

Michael

p.s. I have Sony RX-450 AMD Athlon 1.0ghz with 256 RAM, SMC router, WinXP.

Who is your ISP? Are you running SP2 or 1? Any firewalls?

ISP is Verizon DSL.

SP? Service Pack?

Firewall is off.

Wireless connection probably gets dropped every once in awhile. How strong is the signal?

i'm using cat-5 cable to connect to it. sry, i should have mentioned it first.

i just called Verizon DSL to complain.. i think it may be the signal that they are sending out isn't stable.. but i still get 1.2mb downstream

I had the same problem wih pacbell a few years ago, I assume it's improved since, but it made me switch to Roadrunner and I've never looked back.

Sometimes its actually your router that causes the issues. Have you tried connecting directly to the modem?

Obviously you'll want to have your software firewall turned on when you do this.

I agree, connect directly to the modem and see if you get the same result. If so then its your ISP's side or the modem. If it doesn't, then the router will be the culprit.

Are you using a westell or 2wire modem? Ask verizon what their MTU is (MTU description (http://www.dslreports.com/faq/7801)), here's an FAQ on how to change the MTU on the router. Go Here (http://www.smc.com/index.cfm?sec=Support&pg=FAQ-Details&note_id=619&site=c)

I know that SBC's MTU is 1452, I would usually setup verizon customers with that and works fine.

icic, got it. Thanks for the info.

as a matter of fact, when I connected directly to the DSL modem, my computer started showing up ADs automatically. I then did a system restore and it was back to normal. I hooked the modem back on the router, and turned on Firewall in the router, and now I do not get any disconnection ever since.
