This topic may have been beated on before, just wondering since I don't want to mate a 3" dp to my stock cb, as I save up a bit more to get the rest of the 3" cb. How loud is running an open 3" downpipe when airflow is after the cat? Is it annoyingly loud and raspy? Any hp loss or problems? I doubt there would be any problem since its after the cat right?. Any thoughts?

three words... DON'T DO IT!
it's loud and annoying even with the turbo. if you don't want to mate the 3" DP with the factory catback then head to a muffler place and they will fix you up with a 3" system that will be not annoying.
it will sound and run like shit
Hey just think it would sound like a Mira Mesa Honda car!

OK i need an opinion on the same subject, I'm getting my exhaust tomorrow, and its a cat back, and i was thinking of getting a down pipe at the same time, I'm planning to stick with 2.5" just cause thats all i need, i wanted to get a "race pipe" aka no cat,
that shouldn't make a difference on sound at all right, cause i don't want it to be louder than w/ just with the catback

Eliminating the cat will make a difference in sound. It'll be louder and more raspy/gargley, more of a raw turbo sound.

x2, a lot louder, you might even throw a cel codes since theres no cat for the o2 sensors.

im running a track pipe on my beamer, and its way louder. an your right, you will throw CEL codes if you have a O2 sensor down stream of where the cat should be. lucky for me bmw only runs one and its upstream of it. you can however get restrictor fittings that will only alow a little bit of the exhaust to come across the O2, or you can look up how to dummy your O2. theres a fitting mod that you can do, somewhere on vortex has the diy. I seen some vids with people running open downpipes after the cat, doesnt seem that loud, unless videos don't really have the quality let you really hear it. You can hear the motor and turbo much more which is awesome.

If you have APR chip there is a update you can get for test pipes. And for the topic, why not just run cat to cherry bomb or two from pepboys. just clamp it on for a month or so. Although, imagine waiting and putting it all on at the same time. seat of pants thrill will be happier that way.

There's a 1.8t down the street here with a GT28 turbo and open dp. its not all that loud. i like it actually.

or you could try using a sparkplug (fauler) i have no idea how it is spelled but it worked when the GHL street DP was too high flow.

you can order one of these angle block fixings for the rear 02 sensor on the downpipe to get rid of the CEL. http://www.42draftdesigns.com/faq.htm#test, email wayne schmidt.
