This will be the official status thread that I use for the Golf.
-26 April, the owner signed over the title to me.
-1 May, I went to the title place on base and paid the $115 titleing fee and pick up a temp tomorrow. Will have a temp until I get the keys and smog.
I am supposed to ship of both door handles with the locks tomorrow to have authentic VW Emblem with rubber head keys cut. Once that is done, I can start working on the starter issue.
Running tab as of today.
-Tow Dolly $46
-Gas in buddy's Truck $20
-Certified mail of lien paperwork $10
-Licensing/Title $115
-Keys made $60 (includes shipping both ways) (pending)
Total cost as of 1 May 2007: $251.00

There is some rust. Doesn't look too crazy but I might replace the rear hatch at some point cus I've seen them go for decent prices. Then there is some around the windshield, nothing crazy. The car may be getting a sanding and primering at some point. We'll see. Even a prep, and Maaco job as a daily might be in the future.
Don't be jealous of the 251. That number will climb by the time I don't have something that needs immediate attention. (timing belt, tensioner, starter) But that is what the thread is for, to track the progress, and most importantly the cost. And maybe get some interest from ppl who know what they are doing so when I need help with something they'll be willing  12-packs are cheaper on base than out in town ;)
*edited the price* I read the calc wrong.

I got the Key. One door lock (passenger) is keyed different, but it'll be fine for now. So, no spending for keys to be made.

Good luck with your car. The nice thing about Cali cars is that there is no rust. It might just end up as a parts car for my GTI

I can't see the pics since I am at work. But if you end up using it for your GTi, I could use a new set of headlights, or even just the Pass Side headlight. Oh, and a grill too ;).

Ok, so the Golf is now running. Just took an hour of elbow grease and trouble shooting.
Here are the pics. Front end has some damage. Need a new grill and passenger headlight. There is rust in a few places. A hand sanding/prep and primer might be in the near future.

Ok, so I have the engine on it's way back together.
-new timing belt on
-new waterpump on
-Compressor in place
-Compressor serp. belt on
Haven't tried starting the car yet to check timing, but according to the Bentley I should be good. I guess small adjustments to ensure the 6-8 deg advance can all be done at the distributor. I am still waiting on the PS pump. Had to go a different route, will update the cost when I get a chance.

IT'S RUNNING!!! Yes! That means I just did my FIRST EVER TIMING BELT and the time is right on! It sounded a lot smoother than before. I don't have any coolant in it, so I will go out and get the coolant to refill it. I am also waiting on the PS pump now. I also gotta order the new headlight.
I noticed some stuff under the hood that makes me want to go with an AC delete situation. We'll see how that goes.
Still to come.
-New fuel filter (have it, need to install it)
-Power Steering pump (in the mail)
-New Spark plugs (Old spark plugs look a bit fouled, but hard to tell cus they are Platinum +4s)
-Fresh Coolant
-Possibly all new grounding and Power cables in the engine bay.

Now needs a new fuel pump and housing. Was taking a look at it, and there is some leakage and some crazy goop/adhesive on it. The previous owner or the guy before him took a lot of short cuts with this car.

So now I have to sit and wait for parts to come in. That sucks. Plus I will be stationed down at MCRD San Diego for the next two months starting the 28th, so whatever I don't get done by next weekend is gonna have to wait for each weekend. I hope to have it running and take it to get the VIN verified and possibly SMOG on Friday.

The Fuel pump guy flaked and just returned my money, so I still need a new Fuel Pump housing.
GOOD NEWS. Vehicle is back to "running" status and not on jack stands. New problem, car is good when idleing for the most part. There is a bit of a ticking going on under the hood, sounds like from around the head. Not too heavy but very noticable.
When the car idles, it is fine, when you rev above 1400rpm, I get the oil warning light, and if you keep it rev'd for too long, the warning 'buzz' happens. Oil level is good, I do still need to replace the oil filter and do the oil change.
Oh, and the blower and dash lights used to work, but something happened and they don't now. Niether do the tail lights. All the fuses are good. Any ideas before I go shooting in the dark?

Ok, so it SEEMS like I have boiled down the problem to the timing. I played with it some more, and was able to take the car out for a few trips around the block. It is still bogging a little if you rev it high and let it fall, but doesn't die. That is also when the exhuast emitts the most smoke.
I believe if I get this timing right, it just might be ready to get smogged. I may attempt driving this thing out in town to the closest shop to see if they can get the timing on point. I don't have a timing light, and this playing with it, and just hoping isn't doing so well, lol.
I am going to be needing a new fuel pump housing and probably pump. I will have to check the Bently to see if I have the 60mm or not, but if I have a smaller pump, would it hurt to go up to the 60mm pump?

At this point I could care less what it looks like if Ican just get it running.
As far as cheap goes... Not that cheap. I'm looking at another good amount of money to get it where it needs to be, plus I don't even know what to fix. The fun is about gone.

New valves, valve seals, keepers, guides, decked, all around machined to be good. Got new ARP exhaust studs to bolt up as well. Lookin into Kevin's advice and possible going down to pick n pull and look for the dual pipe exhaust manifold and downpipe, we'll see.

BTW when you were out at Ecology did you see any MK2 front fenders or bodies with good rear arches?
DTolo
08-24-2007, 11:28 PM
Saw a few good fenders... Almost got myself a set. $37 a piece they said...
Rear arches? You talkin about the fender flares? There were more MK1s and MK2s than I could count. Plenty of stuff for picking, from 8V CIS to 16Vs.
Hell of a drive though. Next time i'll try and hit it up as a group event or something.

Here are a couple pics of the Grill I picked up from Ecology. Put a little elbow grease into it... It was sun dried, but was only missing two tabs, and I needed something to rock until I could get the Quad Round front end that I want eventually.
Oh, yeah, nevermind the chalk or dustiness on the bumper... My boy, Dominic, went astray with his sidewalk chalk... He hooked up my bumpers with a little chalked pin-stripe-age.

Ok update... price update to be included shortly...
Got the head back from Group 5 a week ago, but had problems getting it running after I put it on. Dumb ass me, after "double checking" the timing swore up and down it was on, and didn't know why the car wouldn't start.
Long story short, Kevin came by and we got it running today, no smoke coming outta the exhaust. Kevin reassured me my timing WAS off.
So, now, I am happy it is running today, but not feeling too well, so I am going to work on tuning it properly over the next couple days and taking care of the nickle and dime running issues.
Next report hopefully when I am ready to attempt at daily driving it.

Oh man, seriously contemplating it. I shouldn't be spending the cash right now right now, but.... oh so tempting, and the wife offered to go halfies with me to help me get it....aaaggghhhh....
And, now, for the price update....
The head has been decked, new guides, valve seals, valves, new cam (prev mentioned), and gasket kit. Also rethreaded a few things, and new oil pressure switch.
Also, been piecing together the parts I need for the power windows conversion. At this point, all I need is the relay. I have the regulators, switches, and pig tails for all connectors. Even got the center console with the switches in it if needed. Might go a diff route though.

So, the needs have increased. Broken bolts on the AC Condensor and certain brackets cause the need for an AC delete bracket.
Over heating and fan not switching on unless the blower is on mean, i will probably be ordering new rad fan switch and coolant temp sensor (temp gauge is not moving, aghhhh!!!!!!)
So, anybody with an AC delete bracket for 1.8 8V with Power Steering?

Got the A/C deleted, and all hooked up. All A/C components under the hood have been removed up to the firewall.
The previous post was the last time the car ran. After installing the Rad Fan Thermo switch, coolant temp sensor and the non-a/c alt setup, the car doesn't wanna start.
I got it to start VERY ROUGH, so then I went to "fix" the timing, and now nothing. How can I mess the timing up? I mean really?

Ok, so I have been going through EVERYTHING! and I am getting no joy, and no start. I just tried swapping ECUs and nothing. replaced the full throttle switch, nothing. The VERY LAST idea I have is maybe the spark isn't hot enough, and I need a new coil. So, we'll try that next.
I CANNOT FIND THE PROBLEM! WTF?

stick with it, I think your in the right direction. Sounds to be ignition related, it could be the coil or the doohicky in the distributor could be taking a dump on you too.

The doohicky you speak of I assume is the Hall Sender. All tests say it is doing what it is supposed to, switching, and with the right voltage.
Coil is next as Kevin said he'd help.

you are better off finding someone with the same dizzy as yours in a working car and switch it out with yours to see if its the hall sender, as the tests can be a bit tricky.
also coils rarely go bad.

Test the Coil... put the new coil in and...
Nope, no worky. so it is not the coil.
New developments include... I left my multimeter hooked up while trying to start it. ( I always have to jump it, cus the battery is done. And, when I go to start, while it is hooked up to the jumper cables, It'll crank and then drop to 4V. I am thinking the battery is so done that it is acting as a resistor (I know some can do that).
So what's next? Really? Distributor and hall sender?
I just don't understand. Goes from working perfectly, delete all A/C components from engine bay, then NO START, WTF?

Ok, so the Wolfie has OFFICIALLY entered full on project status. I have decided it is far too long in the garage to be able to "quickly get on the road" for a daily driver. So, with that said, it will get project replacements. This means, whenever I have to replace something, I will attempt to replace with an upgarade of some sort.
Firs things first. The car is stuck on jack stands until I can get new wheel bearing housings+hubs+bearings, being as the lug bolts like to get siezed into the hub and also because everything in there is so rust ridden.
So I am looking for upgraded (GLI) spindles and upgraded brakes, maybe 10.1" or Girlings off a Corrado.
I also am thinking on polishing the lips on the BBS RSs I bought. Thinking about doing it myself, but not sure yet.
Monster8V

I'm thinkin about it, I mean tapping would probably be the cheapest way to go... But, it just looks so horrible in there, lol! My old Rabbit's subframe looked better.
I found a full front kit on my VWVortex WTB thread... http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=3598079
And, I'll keep looking for SS lines too. Plus rear disk might not be such a bad idea since I can't figure out how to fix my broken e-brake cables anyways, lol.
Oh, I also thought the GLI and Corrado brakes had a seperate carrier for the calipers as opposed to the GL brakes I have where the calipers bolt directly to the wheel bearing housing.

all MkII Golfs are 9.4 including the GTI, although i believe the 91 and 92 16v GTi is 10.1

Yeah, I was seeing that. I've seen the 22mm master cylinders going for pretty cheap.
I was looking up the prices for EBC rotors and Green Stuff pads, and new the rotors and pads alone would be $250 w/free shipping. So, He says they are super low miles, and everything else is already pressed, so, I might go that route. Pick up the master cylinder later. For now, just gotta cough up an extra $250.

AH, Update...
I have all the stuff to replace my oil pan cus it has a dent in it. Just gotta buy the oil to fill back up with.
My right side window reg was busted, so the guy I got them from refunded me the cost of buying another from somebody else, and that regulator is "out for delivery" and should be here today.
I bought a set of Girlings with everything, pressed onto the spindle,, pretty much bolt on and I should be good. I'll need to get a 22mm master cylinder still. I got the Girlings for $175. I've never bled brakes before, so that will be another first.
Currently I have the single outlet toilet bowl down pipe and Exh. Mani. I busted one of the clips putting it back on, so now only one clip is holding it together. I think this is a good excuse to switch over to the dual outlet exhuast mani and Dp with a bolt up flange.
Oh, I still haven't figure out what is wrong with the tach, and I think I need to adjust timing a bit, accelerator response is sluggish.
DTolo
01-07-2008, 01:01 PM
Oh yes, just realized...

Not a problem bro! :D yea, $125 from a reputable shop.
Jiffy Machine in El Cajon. Across the street from VeeParts. I'd assume it is not just a flat rate though. It depends on the rim, and how difficult it will be to drill. BBS RSs provide a pretty easy platform for drilling.
Oh yeah, they won't quote you on the phone. You gotta bring them in for them to take a look at.

Power door cards are on my list ;). They just aren't up there on the priority list....
I have everything for the lower part of the dash, I just need to decide how I want to fill the gap between the center console and lower dash. The console I used to do the custom job on is meant for a kneebar. So i will either put the kneebar back in, or do something creative.

So I have the temp..., figured out the problem with the Chinese Door handles (Pass side was meant for a back door, not front) and timing seems to be on. I think I'll try to get the Wolfie to a shop to have it checked with a light and set properly if possible.

I would call if you don't have the tach working. They may fail you on visual if they want to be difficult. I've ran across shops that didn't seem to care and some that were crazy anal. Otherwise, I'd put some 91 in there and get it nice and hot first and go from there.

get through 4-5 full tanks of gas first. Maybe use some fuel system cleaner and/or do some sea-foam. Then make sure you get through 1 more full tank of gas before going to SMOG it.
If the car isn't registered, then try and at least get through 1 full tank. Fill out the paperwork at DMV and get a 30 day temp permit to pass smog.

You need this man... http://www.seafoamsales.com/motorTuneUp.htm Just do it outside of your garage, because it will smoke like no other. Awesome progress so far, but was sad to see the loss of the running total. That was my fav. part, as I am thinking of a similar project.

There are some crazy videos of a seafoam cleaning on YouTube. If you do it in your neighborhood, do it before people are milling around outside because people will think your car is going to blow up with all of that white stuff coming out of it.

Yeah, running total, I was said to say I was able to lose count...
The new knuckles rebuild end cost os $385
I dont' know how many oil changes I have done (add oil and oil filter costs)
New Oil pan and gasket (like $29)
Many more man hours than I want to admit to.. (this is my learning car, and trust me, I have learned!)
I don't think I included the cost of the rims (BBS RS 3-pc) $600
+Redrill $125 (and I still don't even have rubber on them.
I have a Viper 791xv that I have been holding on to that will get installed eventually.
Hope that helps ;)
Seafoam, I'll check it out, but it sounds like something the neighborhood will not like me much for, lol.

Took it driving, not too far but have the following report:
Exhaust is a little thick, but NOTHING like it was before the head rebuild (leaky valves)
Acceleration is a bit sluggish. It will rev up, but it is taking a bit longer than I'd think it should. Seems like it is running a little rich.
I am assuming my timing isn't advanced to where it should be...
Also, in regards to the exhaust smell, I did treat the gas that is in it with "HEET" moisture remover/cleaner... So, I'll check the timing again at some point, and again see how the exhaust smells/looks when I get to burn through this tank of gas and into another.

Got the tach working... some of you won't believe it, but somebody like Kevin might... I.. uh... er... had the wirings connected backwards on my coil... yeah. I had the red/blk swapped with the blk wires. They were on opposing terminals. I was surprised to find out the car ran and didn't burn anything out!
Now to replace my coolant temp sender (the black one) to get my temp gauge working.
Not sure if I mentioned this before, but the Chinese Door handle isn't working on the Pass side... I know why now. It was meant for a pass REAR door. So, when I have the extra cash, I will look for a Pass side FRONT door and finish that install.
I really need to get my e-brake cable fixed, but I just can't seem to get it to run right (always slack). Someday I'll take it in for that one.

Yeah, plan is small and slightly stretched rubber for the BBS. Something along the lines of how Manny had his on the old 84' GTi. Lips will remain as they are now, 1".
It will happen in due time. But project has slowed down due to funding. Wife is doing the at home thing for now until the newest little one is ready for day care. Probably won't be till I get back from OCS this summer.

hey,
when you took your rear shock apart, you probably forgot/(fell off) to put a small circlip back onto the piston part of the shock, it's very small and holds everything together.
it's under the dust cover

Nah... that pic was taken before I messed with anything :)... and I didn't pull it all apart... just tried to see if I could fix the bushing so the shock wasn't poking through into my rear deck trim.
As you can see the bushing is shot.. as is every other part of the suspension.

OK, today's costs... wait... my post from yesterday is gone... hmm...
Ok, well.. yesterday I spent $80 on a new upgraded oil pump from Group5 and $8 on a new high rpm oil pressure switch (1.8bar).
Today, spent $340 on rubber, and $33 on stud conversion... allowing this to be...
I went with 195/50-15 instead of 195/45-15 b/c they are easier to find and cheaper (let's be honest). I'd rather a more stretched look, but this sticks the closest to the stock overall diameter, and I am content.

Odometer is not working... But speedo works just fine.
Still getting the high rpm oil pressure warning once the car is warm. I can't find any oil leaks, but haven't gotten a great look at the back of the block.
I don't think I have put over 500 miles since the head gasket... and I have rev'd it over 4k a couple times. Not for long periods of time or anything, but it has happened.
Hmm.... just hoping the oil light doesn't come on tomorrow during smog.

Found a crack in the coolant flange on the front of the head. So ordering that.
-Finished installing the MKIII style (Chinese) door handles.
-Replaced the pivot bolt that connects the power steering pump bracket to the non-A/C bracket. It was broken and missing, likely a reason for belt noise.
Still deciding when, where, and if to get the diagnostics done.
If I can get it to Daily status, I'll keep it. If an offer comes in before then, it'll be sold. I could care less about the condition of the body at this point.

New VDO Vision series gauges on their way, via the 'Tex.
Oil Pressure
Oil Temp
Coolant Temp

All with 42DD LEDs installed and wiring harnesses. I need to get the senders, but since I got all 4 gauges, with 3 gauge DD panel and wiring kit by 42DD for $100, I don't mind ordering the senders, one by one as I get the dough :)

Gauges installed... Oil pressure, Volt and Water temp. Water temp doesn't have a sender yet, but it is in there. All with MKIV Blue Colormatch LEDs from 42DD.
I am not sure if the Oil Temp will ever get installed. I am not too concerned with it.
I finally hooked the screen up to a DVD player I have had in the garage forever. So that is now working.
I installed the alarm, Viper 791xv, with remote start and more options/expandable capabilities than I'll ever need. Unfortunately, amidst all the new wiring I had for it, I lost the valet/programming switch. So before I put the dash back together I am waiting for the switch to come in the mail. Then the remote start and all will be function checked.
Summary:
Gauges: Installed - missing sender for Water temp
Screen: connected and DVD player installed
Alarm: Fully connected, waiting function check when valet switch arrives.

Man on man... After a good test drive today to try and trouble shoot the whining noise coming from the engine (I'm pretty sure it is the timing belt rubbing the back of the crank pulley), I realized on my newly installed Oil press gauge... that the engine IS NOT holding oil pressure. It appears my check of the oil pressure with the pnuematic test gauge did not prove correct, being as I did not allow the oil to reach operating temperature.
I still have no visible oil leaks. So I don't know how I could be losing so much oil pressure. It sucks. Once the block cools I will go out and check the spark plugs to see if any are fouled with burnt oil. Meaning my head gasket job was bad from the start.
This leaves me in limbo again... at this point, if the engine is not buildable, and the body needs work... I may be resorting to a part out. Not to give up, but becuase getting a new shell and a new engine would be pointless if I need both, lol.
So, who knows... I have learned a ton on this car, just never got to feel the accomplishment of driving the thing after.

Latest Update:
I shouldn't be spending any money on this until the block is rebuilt or replaced, but...
Picked up a round core support for $30 from kyyle_m... so.
Car is dirty, and I am missing the P/S inner light. I also haven't even bothered with the wiring for inners yet. However, the H4s have the hi and lo in one bulb, so, the inners are just cosmetic I guess. So the H4 wiring conversion is done, and all workin'.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v497/tinytolo/DualRoundInstalled.jpg
Still need to either:
1-replace all seals and bearings on bottom end
or
2-get aba bottom end with oil squirters and begin building that
