Updated: US launch of VW Scirocco back on the table

Updated: Volkswagen’s American division may not be in favor of introducing the new Scirocco to the US market, but the final decision will come from VW Group’s head-honcho Martin Winterkorn closer to the production version’s unveiling at next year’s Geneva Motor Show. Autoweek has just reported that VW spokesman Hans-Gerd Bode has said that if given the go-ahead, the new Scirocco will arrive next year following its debut in Geneva.

Original: Volkswagen won’t be selling its upcoming Scirocco sport hatchback in the US, an all-new model due to enter production next year. After bowing out from the auto world back in the early nineties, VW is rejuvenating the Scirocco nameplate with a new hatch based on the Iroc concept car that debuted at last year’s Paris Motor Show.

“We don’t want it,” said VW America executive VP Adrian Hallmark in an interview with Automotive News. Despite the previous generation’s success, the new Scirocco won’t reach US shores because of fears that it would cannibalize sales of the GTI hatchback, also known as the Rabbit. “The GTI is iconic. It’s as strong a name as the Beetle,” Hallmark says, adding “it’s economically suicidal for us to risk the sales volume and the potential for GTI.”

Hallmark revealed that the Scirocco and GTI will share the same platform including the same 2.0L TFSI engine and chassis but will receive a lower ride-height. VW will instead focus on its sedan range in the US rather than the smaller coupe/hatchback market.

I was talking with the three VWofA execs who make those decisions over this weekend, as far as bringing all new models over to the USA, and they told me that announcement is very premature. IF the thing gets produced, it will be considered, but its going to be very cost prohibitive because of US DOT regulation certifications. Frankly, they're more interested in doing upgraded versions of the 2.0T GTI and a new GLI Jetta that actually resembles a real GLI. They didn't see the Scirocco as being a very realistic thing to offer here.

Ya know... That car is pretty nice and stuff... But it doesn't resemble the old Rocco in any way... I mean... Maybe it shouldn't. But it would make a lot more sense.

I just feel that car is too much of a giant step in the future look of cars. I know it is time we proceed into the future. But what ever happened to nostalgia these days.

I always keep in mind that the Rocco was the foundation for the Corrado, and this new "IROC" makes me wonder what will they do to my favorite VW model of all time if they in-fact resurrect a new Corrado.

Volkswagen usually keeps their past in-mind. Look at the Rabbit/Golf line, the overall dimensions of the car haven't been 5 inches off since 1974. It's a pretty successful car overall.

I'm just afraid that this new IROC will destroy the Golf, Jetta, and perhaps future Corrado.

I can pretty much guarantee there won't be a future Corrado. It was after all the Scirocco III, only the Scirocco II was still selling so well in europe when the Corrado was ready for production, VW decided to give it a new name and sell it alongside the Scirocco II.

The new Scirocco is the new Corrado. You won't see another car with the Corrado name, unfortunately.

If you are looking for a new Corrado, check out the 08 Audi TT 3.2Q DSG - that is as Corrado as you're going to find, with the killer speed activated spoiler and all the neat gizmos.
