View Full Version : Excuse me, but why can't I go backwards?

Got my tranny rebuilt while the engine was out. Car is running now, drove it like 20 miles, and pulled it in the garage last night to do some work. Got finished, went to go back it out and realized...I don't have a reverse. Shifter won't go in at all; first through fifth are fine. Tried adjusting the shifter linkage and haven't had any luck...it just made the other gears more notchy. I do need to bleed the clutch, but I doubt that'll have any effect on not having a reverse.

My transmission knowledge isn't very extensive; is something like this from a bad build or something else?

Side note; I've been driving a '96 automatic Nissan Sentra for six months. 7psi on my GTI at 5k feels fucking amazing. I can't wait to turn the boost up.

Dang, I don't have any clue about this one. You can push down towards the ground with the shifter, it goes towards reverse, but the gear never engages? Does the shift lever move when you put it towards reverse? Do the two cables get real loose when you attempt to engage reverse?

And the side note about the sentra made me "LOL".

Shifter goes down, and I motion it towards reverse, but always end up in first. It's like reverse isn't there. It's probably something internal...

Getting out and pushing my car out of a parking spot today wasn't really very endearing. Shit.

Oh! You're saying you can move the shifter towards reverse, and a gear engages. The problem is that the gear that is engaged is 1st.

Yikes. Sounds like you need to make some phone calls.

Who ever put in the tranny didn't go through the gears. Its just a matter of adjustment and shouldn't take more than 10 minutes to fix.

Thanks. What kind of adjustments? Something I should be able to do myself?

Apparently I jumped the gun. Fooled around with the linkage more today, completely eye-balled it (didn't set the tranny lock), and now I'm driving backwards all over town.

Also found out that the tech that did the work on my car forgot about a knock sensor wire when he went go to pull the fuel rail, pulled the wires right out of the connection. Shit. Car is running decent otherwise...after it takes three looooooong cranks to start, of course. I'll be checking fuel pressure and bleed-off this weekend. No idea why I'm telling you guys this. Bye.
