Any down side of compressing drive "to save space?"

it takes more time to access the data because it has to be uncompressed.

what's the circumstance? how big is the drive? what kind of data is on there? why do you want to compress it?

HD space is CHEAP!! i bought a 250 gig external drive for my photos last year for $100.

Like Jacob said, compressing your drive will cause your computer to slow way down as it now has to uncompress each file whenever it wants to access it. I would only do it as a last resort to get some room on my drive. The other thing that worries me about compression is that it can be harder to recover your data if your hard drive craps out.

If you're really hurting for space and have no other ways of clearing up space, nor can you go buy an external drive (I just picked up a 500GB drive for $160, so storage is really cheap), then do it. Otherwise, stay away.
