What kind of car?
That sounds high. I'm doing a waterpump, T-stat, belts, expansion tank and fan clutch and check engine light on, on an E46 with 150K on it as we speak and its less than that.

Car is a 1999 Audi A6 2.8, was pouring coolant really bad, found out it was the water pump. My brother just called me and told me how much they quoted, I can get details later. My bro is a bmw tech, but he knew one of the audi techs who said he may be able to get the parts at discount and may be able to do the job on the side
that waterpump runs off the T-belt and isn't a fun job, dealer prices are usually always higher, but make it nice or make it twice, there are very, very few independants I would send customers too, I have one VW/AUDI shop, and One BMW Porsche shop that I trust to send people too

$1800 is quite high for that car.
Have your timing belt done at the same time! It has to be removed to get the water pump out anyway, so replace it.
We've got a few timing belt kits that are exactly what you need, and do include the water pump.

shoot me a pm! How much?
Paying to get it done right and getting ripped off are two different things, call around, I can reccomend a good Audi independant in Long Beach my Buddy owns and he was trained by AUDI on that car, but if its not mobile, you have to find out wether its worth the $100 tow from south county to Long beach, my guess is it would. PM me if you want his info. Like Mike said, do the t-belt at the same time. you need a special bar on the V6 to hold the cams, some guys can do it without puttng the core support in the service position, I've done it once, and after having to have a blood transfusion, i won't do it again.

You might also check with Ron at VW Specialities. He's a tiny bit closer in Huntington Beach. Does some excellent work there.

Ron Woods at VW Specialties is awesome for the OC area
All German Auto or Sam Tech in San Diego are another good place in SD

Also try Lubo @ La Jolla Autotech Porsche & Audi -5770 Miramar Rd -(858) 458-1022.
Very reasonable prices and one of the few honest mechanics I have ever come across.
Take care,

$1800 sounds too high for parts and good labor. Almost triple the price of a good local mechanic if you ask me. My guess is VW dealerships would probably charge $1000-1200, so even then, $1800 is steep.

beach house imports could probably get it done tomorrow.
vw specialties is top knotch as well but after my last experience with beach house, i'm repping them for good!

Yea I just got quoted $1600 from the stealership
for All the belts and water pump...
A normal shop would probably charge 1K or a little more
but I'm gonna just pay $300 for the needed parts and save myself 1300!!!
