Run away,

one its an auto
two its sitting in a snow covered lot
three its been leased
fourth it was leased again

leased cars are trashed for the most part, and the autobox sucks to drive, and is problematic if you start modding

actually that picture is old. it was in utah for 6 months. now its in arizona. its been leased once and then auctioned off to a dealer then another dealer.

I agree with Mike about the whole leased car thing. I would go for a clean private party with good maintenance records first. Also definitely get the manual.

theres no way i would get a deal like im getting now. i cant afford a car like what you speak of. that would probably be around 23-26k

usually when a car keeps getting auctioned off, it means it needs some expensive work, thats what happens with trade in BMW's here, we check them out, if they need too much work they get wholesaled off, then the next person inline buys it, figures out the same and it goes back to auction, 70K is ripe for a set of turbos, that means the motor/trans has to come out, thats a $5K job easy

Streamline

That price is way too much for the mileage and its history.
If all the turbos were replaced and it wasn't leased than maybe.

http://losangeles.craigslist.org/wst/car/340246064.html

Get this car, it's a 6 speed, same mileage; however it has it's turbos replaced and timing belt so you wouldn't have to worry. Plus it's an '02 which means you don't have to worry about the f'cking f-hose.

Plus it has extended warranty until 100k or 2009.

*F'ck, I wish I found this car earlier. Anyone wanna buy mine for 23k? only 39k miles :)*

I'm happy I found that car for you, it looks like such a damn good deal.
Plus it will always be good to have another SUPER RARE! Silver S4 =). (Silver is the fastest color:p).

Easy for you to say. There's no traffic way up where you live. :p

With that many miles, you're getting into turbo failure range. Some peoples' turbos last for a LOT longer than 65K, but 70K seems to be the magic number with the 2.7T. Although I can't say how hard those miles were. (i.e, 70K of hard or babied miles)

Wait until the A5 comes out (is it out now?) and buy my S4. I should have new brakes on it by then, and it's silver with red pin-stripe, the fastest of the silver S4s.

As some have said there are definitely better deals out there. It's all about finding the car that feels right for you. You will know when you find the right car.

The absolute most important thing is to make sure the timing belt has been done. There has been several cases of early failure on the 2.7T. I had a timing belt go on my A4 and it was about $2,000 to have the engine rebuilt, and that was a 1.8T. You can only imagine how much more it would be for the 2.7T.

Me personally, I couldnt do without my 6 speed. But if I had to have an automatic, it would either be a Tip or DSG. You can def. help the TIP out some with the GIAC Tip Chip. Not sure if Tony has the TIP chip but maybe he could give some input on it.

As far as the turbos are concerned, its just chance. My car is stage 2+ and my turbos have 101,000 miles on them. Yet some stock cars with half the miles have blown thier turbos.

I am still debating if I want to sell mine, but if so I would take about $7000 off what that guy is asking.

I would be cautious with a manual. I had a 2001 MT6 and the syncros were already having problems at 50k miles. I traded mine in a bought a new A4. They are about 7k to R&R. You can read several threads on this at audiworld.com. The autos are supposed to be much more bulletproof if you maintain them. Don't get me wrong the MT6 is very fun but it comes with a price.

In addition I would not by a car that has ever been out of the state of CA. I also bought a out of state car that ended up being salvaged as somehow the title was washed clean by moving it from state to state. I even ran a carfax which said the title was clean.

Look online I have seen nice '01's w/ <60k for in the $15-16k range. You may have to travel a bit but you should be able to find something in CA.

Hope this helps, feel free to ask me more questions. :)

One more thing to think about. Whenever you find that white stuff on the ground, you have a much better chance of finding that reddish brown crap under your car. (even if the area supposedly doesn't use salt on the roads)

Ok we're going to see the car again today. I test drove it last week in Whittier and damn! thats nice. Fast, very responsive, clean, no dents, dings, scrapes. Guy has every single dealer visit, servicing, complaint on hand in a folder. He's selling because he doesnt drive it and its a second car now. He wants to buy a house. Thing is he wants 19k for it. Replaced Turbo and Timing belt at 60k. I have to get him down to 18k because my loan is only for 18,500. I still need georgeys for tax and license yo! Rezie and Harris are gonna roll down with me tonight to see it again. They're the muscle, gonna beat him down to 18k. The reason the bank is giving me 18500 is because they quoted the car at 17600. I want this car!!!!!!!!!

It would be really helpful for your s4 guys to let me know what to look for or what to ask this guy tonight to help me get him down to 18k. So send me questions for him and concerns to ask for.

do you think its justafiable to ask for 19k? hes completetly stock. just replaced th k03's and t-belt at 60k. That doesnt necessarily jump the value up. your just supposed to do it.
i have to get him to take it in for smog.

The timing belt was def. something he needed to take care of. As far as replacing the turbos, that was great on his part. Who knows they could have blown and thats why he replaced them tho. I would find out who did the install on the new turbos as a crappy install job could actually do more bad than good.

As far as the price is concerned, these cars arent selling for much now days so I would def. offer no more than $18,000.

Just remember what you're getting yourself into. His mods list is easily over $12k just in parts!

Ko4's = $2600
Fueling= $2500
Clutchmaster Setup is about= $2000
ASP= $1000
DP's= $1500
AWE IC's= $1500
Samco= $500
Wheels, Tires & extra's= $1500

Now, just imagine the Labor with all that, cause chances are that you won't get it all at once. So your labor cost will add up very quick. Even if you did have everything all at once, you're still looking at over $3k in Labor.

The Timing belt, water pump and all that shit was also done by Wicked Motor Sports.

Shit, I was thinking of buying it and swaping all the parts and then selling the car on Autotrader for like $17K- Yeah, I bet I could sell it to some kid who just sold his civic for that much with just my Chip and wheels, haha.

I'd be killing it then!!

"2.7L Twin Turbo, which requires the motor and the ENTIRE front end to be pulled in the event of turbo failure, which there is a documented history of.

I'd pass. Actually, I'd run like hell..."

"Don't buy a 2.7T unless you can afford to upgrade to ASP Stage III with liquid cash, because it's gonna happen, and stock replacement is just setting yourself up for failure and dissapointment."

"All I am saying is that if you buy a 2.7T, you need to have a fund set aside to fix the deficiency in the turbos and spend atleast four figures at the drop of a hat. Either that or put some elbowgrease into it: http://forums.vwvortex.com/zer...age=3

What I didn't say earlier was that I would never, ever buy one of those 2.7T engines, are you ****ing kidding me? I know from experience!

Let's take a look back in history for a moment, shall we? When Porsche took Audi's 2.2l 5 cylinder 20 valve turbo engine making 227hp and built the 315hp RS2 engine, all they did was change the exhaust manifold, bolt on a bigger turbo, installed higher flow fuel injectors, installed a different exhaust cam, and changed the software to suit the bigger turbo. The Porsche engineers in all their wisdom judged the motor from Audi to be able to reliably handle +100hp over stock with no internal modifications.

Not the case with the RS4. When Cosworth took the standard S4 2.7T engine from 250hp to 380hp, they had to change: Cosworth cylinder heads, intake manifold, injectors, crankshaft, crank main bearings, rods, rod bearings, pistons, intercoolers, exhaust manifold *breathe...* AND they swapped in slightly larger K04 turbos. Doesn't seem like a high degree of confidence in the stoutness of the basic motor to me."

"quoted for truth.. i used to have one. guess why i don't have it anymore? lol"

"I love those cars, but the 2.7t horror stories have pretty much eliminated any chance of me ever owning one."

Take it with a grain of salt. You may be well aware of any problems with the 2.7T. I wasn't and this thread gave me second thoughts but more so made me want to do more research into it. :tup:

I've been playing with the idea of an S4/Allroad too but this thread from the vortex made me a little hesitant. allroad/2.7t (http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=3158826&page=1)

you hear all of those quotes.......but you don't hear all the people who have had Zero problems with their 2.7T. I would admit....the 2.7T needs care and maintenance, maybe slightly more than say a Toyota or Honda. But the rewards far outweigh the cons. You can be unlucky and get one that is a nightmare.....but that is up to you to do your homework (all maintenace records, check TB, CPP, etc). Mine has been super.....in the 4+ years of ownership. Would I get another one......you bet:D

OK hopefully everything goes good with the white s4 from L.A. The guy likes that I'm an enthusiast and that I will take extra special care of it. I offered him what he wanted....18,800 with a 300 deposit for good measure. I just reapplied for the loan again but this time with the 2002 w/48k on it. I'll find out tomorrow if it gets approved. If not, I'll still get it but I'll have to pay tax and licensing out of my pocket to the DMV. Ugh!!! Oh well, I want this car.

If this one doesnt line up, or someone sweeps it from me (wish a muthafucka would). Then there is the 2001 w/58k on it in Santa Barbera I tested today. New tires and brakes and replaced right passenger CV boot.

wish me luck bitches!

Well, might as well throw my .02 in as well!

If you find a low mileage '02 (like the casablanca!) at a decent price buy it!

Ok, that being said ..............

I had a '00 with all the nightmares (and then some) and I spent alot of hard earned cash building the car my needs (track events, etc) Stage III etc. Now while I finished modding it alot sooner than I planned on, I LOVED THAT CAR! Someday soon I will buy another B5 S4. As long as you know what to expect, go for it. A Stage III S4 is just so much damn fun to drive!

Everyone else has given great advice on what to watch out for, so just look, and look closely at everything.

Good luck!
