Who here rides road bikes?

Any local SD shops you recommend?

I'm looking to get a higher end-entry level road bike, ~1000-1500 and am not specific to brand.

Planning on going for a ride on a few bikes this weekend at BM Cycle.

Considering Trek 2100, cannondale R700, douglas fusion, etc.

Let me know what you find.

I'm still interested in biking to work to get back into shape.

Black Mountain is the place to go.

yeah I stopped by BM bikes yesterday. Very helpful, friendly, non-pushy sales. Basically said come back and take some bikes out for a ride and see what you like. Implying that my busines suit wasn't adequate for riding bikes ;)

Unfortunately the best bang for your buck bike right now is the Douglas Fusion (custom brand of Colorado Cycle).

1500 + 50 for shipping, no tax, aluminum frame, with appropriate carbon seat stays, Shimano Dura Ace and Ultegra components. Killer deal. Only concern is fit. =\

let me know what you find for good shops paul. i'm thinking about joining the ranks with melissa after i do the las vegas marathon in december.

I've started looking at Kona again. Used to ride their MTB years ago and was in love with them. I think you can get a Zing for $1200.

Paul

6' even. Likely will ride a 56 or 58 cm frame. CC has a great fitment guarantee but it'll be more of a hassle than having the local shop tweak a bike i buy from them.

yeah, I am 6'~6'1" but since I have slightly longer legs 58cm is the frame for me.

Really the only tweaking you usually have to do is swapping out the stems. If you get the correct seat tube length from a mail order shop I can build it for you.

Another thing, if you can wait till the end of the summer thats usually when the year end deals are and you can get a decent discount.

at least its a healthy hobby tom. i mean how much can you really spend :D

$12,500 for a custom carbon frame
$4,500 carbon racing rims
$4,000 components

carbon + carbon + carbon = more than my audi is worth :ha:

Out of all his hobbies Cycling would be the least costly... its almost all initial investment. The occasional tube/tire here and there.

have you factored in another $300 or so for pedals and shoes?

also, did you notice any difference in shifting/braking between the dura ace vs ultegra components?

i think i'm leaning a lil toward Leader. i like the idea of having it be a completely custom build...choose the components and go. You want to go down to National City and take a look/ride?

I just bought a Leader Bike 730R frame and just waiting for it to arrive. I built a road bike with a frame off of a website and turns out how they measured it, its too big for me. So as soon as the Leader shows up, I am going to swap parts over.

My works doing a corporate team for the MS150 ride in Oct. and I want to do it.

$300 for pedals and shoes? I've offered him my spare pair of pedals. If he'd get a set of egg beaters for $80 and a pair of decent shimano shoes he's only looking at $175.

If you need to get stuff like that and the shop you buy from doesn't offer a discount on accessories after the purchase, go online. There are a ton of Online shops that have DEEP discounts and sometimes packages.

Hey Kerry, what do you think about pedals... a specific brand to look at or stay away from?

I'm kinda partial to Black Mountain. Also, if you find a bike that they carry cheaper at another shop they'll match the price which is nice because you also get a couple free tune ups when you purchase a bike from them. Plus the fact that they are uber close to home makes it a good deal.

Hey Kerry, what do you think about pedals... a specific brand to look at or stay away from?

Well considering for the first 4 years I rode I always used hand me down shoes and pedals... lol. I personally don't see the need to go out and blow $150 on a pair of shoes or pedals. AXO , Shimano, C-dale, and Lake make good entry level inexpensive shoes. As for pedals, Road specific, Look makes good pedals also there are several knock off brands out there that make good stuff.

The only thing I'd look out for are Speedplay pedals, Sure the pedal is light, but your're putting the whole mechanism on your shoe creating rotational mass. If you're looking for light a hell and able to use mountain or road, cranks brothers Egg Beaters. The cleat is a normal cleat and you can clip into and of the 4 sides.

I personally run a set of Coda SPD pedals that are about 6 years old and a pair of Shimano shoes that are about 3 years old.
