Well, I haven't ridden it, so it's new to me...
Vintage 1967 Dewey Weber "Performer" SuperScoop...all 9' 8" of her...

that's a long walk...
now, just to give you an idea of the scale of the thing:

This board was purchased new by my father, and hasn't been ridden in a long time. In fact, it hasn't been in the water for over a decade, perhaps longer. We moved into this house 14 years ago, and on moving day it went straight into the attic. I couldn't stop thinking about it, so yesterday I went up to the attic to survey it's condition. aside from some sketchy/ugly/rookie ding repairs, and being set upsidedown, with wax, atop the ever-so-itchy pink insulation filling, it was fine. I had to set it free. This was all fine and dandy, until I realized that about 5 years ago, we had a retractable ladder installed, and wouldn't you know it, the angle just wasn't right, and it was impossible to get that 9'8" beast out of there without another ding. So I got my tools and took apart the damn ladder. After reacquainting it with the sun for a while, and doing the cheapest thing you can do with a credit card (scrape wax), I now realize that there is no way in hell I am going to get this to the beach in my rabbit.
Guess it's time for an oldschool roof rack :)

That is really nice. I'm still looking for the right board to teach my wife on, but with the new kid, I think that's on hold for a couple years. That board is in really nice shape !
I may have a solution to your transportation needs...

Yeah...this board is so big and heavy, Weber never entertained the thought of adding a leashloop. I guess that's smart...I wouldn't want to be attatched to the thing, but at the same time, I REALLY don't want it floating freely in the whitewash and colliding with anyone/thing...so I think for now, until I get the feel for tiptoe-ing down the deck of this battleship, I will be paddling around Dohoeny when the "break" is clear. Maybe trestles. I am more of a skimboarder than a surfer these days, mostly because I don't like to fight/paddle against little groms to get waves, and I never got into shortboarding because I hate having my ass dangling in the water like a hunk of bait. With this thing, I should be able to sit outside and take my pick. Once I start paddling, I pity the man who gets in my way.

I surf. Might go today since you got me thinking about it.
The water is so amazing right now. All you need is boardshorts and a rashguard.
I ride a 9'2" stewart.

Right on man, I made the drive from Dana Point all the way to PB the day before yesterday because there were no waves up here, and I wanted to get in the water!
I think the water is pushing 70 degrees right now, which is amaaaaazing!
I think my shoulders need a break from paddling for a day, so I think today I'll go spearfishing with a buddy :)

So, I had a little cash laying around that I managed not to spend during my trip to the UK, so, I had to spend it on something, and it was just shy of the amount I need for my coilovers...and I hate waiting/saving up for things I want...so, instead I went to Exile Skimboards in San Clemente and put in my order for a full custom carbon skimboard, which now brings my skim arsenal up to 3.
only posting this because I won't have it until friday...perhaps monday...or shit...tuesday since monday is a holiday...and I'm very anxious to get it on the water.
enjoy this mini-movie of my friend Brendan "Noogie" Stevens ripping it up Exile Style.

I dunno, it was my first board...so it has sentimental value (read: it's got dings and isn't pretty, or top of the line, but it floats.)
I bought it for $100 back in the 6th grade, definitely got that much use out of it, and seeing it go to a friend would be pretty sick, so I couldn't really ask you for cash
I also seem to acquire boards through trades, more than purchase...for instance, my last board was from a friend who wanted a little more bass in his sound system, so I traded him my 2 12" subs, box, and a 500 watt JL amp for one of his old boards.
I could use a new shift knob, the one on the top of this page in particular.
http://www.autotech.com/prod_inter_shiftknob.htm
you can always borrow it too.
I use to surf back in the days and would like to start again maybe we should start doing are GTG's at La Jolla Shores if Sushi Hut is going to be a problem??

that IS interesting, considering I'm transferring to UCSC next fall :)
I hear the locals can be somewhat, lets see...posessive, of their breaks....also heard there's a big cross town rivalry thing amongst surfers...
luckily, I am (mostly) a skimboarder...we don't get hassled or made fun of like the spongers (boogie boarders) because we don't really compete for the same waves that surfers are on....besides, I don't really like the idea of my ass hanging in the water like a chunk of bait.
You got the lowdown on what beaches people skim at?

ideal skimmage is at paradise beach..
to get there: hwy 1 exit 41st, go all the way to the end of the street, then you'll hit sand
also natural bridges beach.. at the end of west cliff drive [ask locals how to get there]
both these spots are off the beaten path, no restrooms, no hotdogonastick just waves and sand as God and Duke intended... plus if you ever get bored, just follow hwy 1 north to half moon bay/ san francisco and you'll have your choice of beaches all the way up.. Pacifica gets some pretty big rips from time to time.. just listen to the surf reports and you'll know where to go

yeah, let me just turn a vintage Weber Performer that my father bought and surfed when he was my age, which is now worth more than twice as much as my car, into a fucking coffee table...or a chair? not that I would, but how the hell would you go about making a chair out of nearly 10' of resin and foam?

haha you sound like my dad.
at first, he didn't want me surfing it, citing that it was an antique and that he's got a lot of memories on that board, and that he didn't want it getting damaged, so he wanted to put it up on the wall in our billiards room.
Then I said "Dad, would you rather you remember all the waves you used to catch on the board every time you see it hanging on the wall, or would you rather your one and only son started surfing on it, catching more waves, continuing the stoke of such an awesome board, whilst maintaining the respect and admiration for it that you had when you were my age?"
memories don't have to end.

i'd sell a limb for a Robert August and i'd hang it on my wall
[dont snap daddy's board, that's bad juju]

RollinInGreenz
10-03-2007, 10:52 AM
it actually does have a finbox, a mighty large one at that!
Guess it has to be though, considering it's 13" long...definitely brittle though, it's made of Bakelite I think and it's color has faded and it's got a bunch of stress cracks in it...but that's cool, because I doubt i'll be making any sharp bottom turns on this thing hahaha

oh i couldnt tell you didnt have a picture of the bottom doubt your gonna take it out on huge days anyway

yeah it's a blast when it's knee-waist high...I just sit outside and paddle onto any wave I choose...once it gets moving though there's not much that'll stop it

just walked in the door from Santa Cruz...
It was kinda rainy this weekend so I didnt get to skim until this morning, post-high-tide, which kindof sucked, because by then there was a 20 knot wind putting whitecaps on everything...but all in all...55 degrees isn't as cold as I thought it'd be
