A 50bmg would do a number on on steel. I just depends on the distance, thickness and type of bullet. Obviously they were too close to the target that was too thick. I've shot steel with my 9mm and M1A. 9mm just mushrooms and doesn't do much. 308/30-30 goes a good way into the metal. I've seen what 50BMG will do to 2" thick steel.

As for ricochets (spelling I'm sure) I've been pelted by 45acp lead at IDPA being 30 yards away. The pieces lose so much energy after hitting something solid they're not as harmful.
